Does anyone have any idea what this might be? The connector doesn't seem Amiga-ish...

Look like it could be attached to an A1000 side expansion.

It does indeed. And the E-bay auction doesn't really show anything that remotely resembles an 68040 processor, so it might as well just be some extra memory.

Anyway, I don't have (or want/need) an A1000 so I'll let this one pass :-) . Or is the A1000 side-expansion slot compatible with the A500 one?
