Jabberwocky
« on: July 22, 2007, 11:12:38 PM »
Have decided to have a proper look at Jabberwocky.
As it can connect to al the major chat services, thought this would be worth while.
I have no idea how to use this to chat in irc.
Anyone else managed this?
And if so, can you give any pointers?
Cheers.

It works inthe same way as MSN or Yahoochat. You need to add people that you know so that you can chat to them.

As far as setting it up goes, just read the docs, they do explain well how to get it up and running.

It's still being developed (as is WookieChat) so us miggy users aren't being left behind if you want to stay in touch with friends.

I know I need to add them.
It's specifically how, I'm struggling with.
Doesn't say on the docs as far as I can see.

Admittedly, it doesn't jump out at you but it is there:

Go to the main menu (of the docs), go to the "Subscription" menu and scroll down until you see the section entitled "Subscribe with the "Roster/add contact" menu. You will see a button marked "Add contact window". Click that and you will be taken to the section to add a new contact. I won't repeat it here but if you follow it once, it becomes very clear and I can't make it any clearer than it is written in the docs.

I have no problem adding some contacts.
Jabber IDs are straightforward.
There are instruction for adding an MSN contact and a few others, so no problem there.
Its the IRC contacts that I am struggling with.

Sorry, but I'm confused by the above - IRC contacts include Jabber, ICQ, MSN & Yahoo.

So if you can add those, you have your I(nternational) R(elay) C(hat) contacts.

Can you explain exactly what you cannot do & I'll try to help.

Erm, you have confused me now.
Let's try this.

I want to speak to person A on IRC.Amigaworld.Net
Person A is on #Amigaworld.

What format would the contact name take.
ie. A%hotmail@msn.jabber.org

Does this help to clarify?

Yes, I now understand where you are going wrong.

You don't use Jabberwocky to go to IRC.amigaworld.net. It's a one-to-one chat system, not one-to-many as IRC is.

In other words, Jabberwocky is like a telephone, you speak to only one person, directly.

To go to IRC.Amigaworld.net, you need to use IRC programs, like AmIRC or Wookiechat.

Once you log on to IRC.Amigaworld.net using one of those programs, then you can have a private chat using that program.

That's why you weren't getting anywhere ;)

As far as I can tell, you can't. Jabberwocky is not an IRC client.

Yes, have Wookie and Amirc.
I was under the impression that Jabberwocky can also connect to IRC.
There appears to be irc transports on some of the jabber servers.

I've got Jabberwocky to talk to Wookie and Amirc on Bitlbee.
Wookie seems the best bet as you can be logged onto the Bitlebee server and talk to all the other non IRC chat clients at the same time as being logging into the IRC server of your choice.
