Amiga Centre at Kent?
« on: July 13, 2007, 11:56:42 PM »
Last I head Amiga was spending $25,000 on an Operating System and $10,000,000 on naming rights to a minor league ice hockey stadium.  Did both deals fall through?

What we\'re witnessing is the sad, lonely crowing of that last, doomed cock.

Weird isn't it - you could swap the figures round and they would make more sense.

Amiga has taken Hyperion to court. There is endless -ahem- discussion -ahem- on Amigaworld.net, where the worlds finest, well most prolific, armchair lawyers spout daily rhetoric supporting their personal viewpoint. IMHO you're best off visiting there to find out rather than inviting some leakage of that diatribe over here.

The AmigaCentre in Kent naming issue is still open - latest is that City of Kent officials are still expecting Amiga Inc to make 2.5million available in an escrow fund beore groundbreaking time (latest update is that this is expected to be early August, although the contract is still open for tender AFAIK). Time will, no doubt, tell.

Good work Piru.

I thought this was telling from a May article from the same newspaper:

"In announcing the partnership, Kent city officials called Amiga the "third most-recognized brand in Europe" and the "world's premier provider of multimedia enabling technologies."

But even McEwen acknowledged that last claim dates back several years. It appeared in a British publication, he said, but he could not recall which one.

A visit to Amiga's Issaquah offices last week found just McEwen and one other employee in a suite of offices strewn with cardboard boxes and old computers. Although he was introduced by Kent officials as the president of Amiga, McEwen said he is really vice president. He later added that he had recently been named acting president."

Looks like a top-flight organization to me.  I'd invest ;)

Amiga's acting president, Bill McEwen, did not return phone calls or an e-mail requesting comment this week.

What a damn coward!

This clownery from "Amiga" is just shameful, so... I have decided to become a billionaire by this weekend, and will purchase all rights to all Amiga and Commodore trademarks, copyrights, and patents. I will then give (for free!) all these properties to Dave Haynie and Bil Herd for them to either develop into a business of their own, or retire the rights for all eternity (where eternity equals about 90 years or whatever the legal limits on such things are).

Personally.. I'd rather become a billionare, buy Amiga Inc, get someone to make some OS4 hardware, pay hyperion a couple of million for work done so far and then negotiate a new contract where hyperion have the right to distribute the OS (and also receive good monthly payments for working on the OS).. The only thing I would say is that OS4 hardware would have to be approved (for free) by (the new) Amiga Inc's Quality Control Division and then can be officially labelled "Amiga Approved"...

Why do that? Largely so there's no bad amiga hardware on the market. There would also be (probably via hyperion since they would probably be the ones doing the work for drivers) boards that could be branded "AmigaOS Compatible" for vendors who do not want "Amiga Approved" status... (Or are awaiting approval)

People could also submit PPC boards that they have found that happen to work with AmigaOS to some kind of "Unofficial Compatibility list" which could then be checked and set up as "AmigaOS Compatible"

OK.. Long winded and a total dream and some would say still not ideal, but that's the kind of situation I'd like to see...
Back to action!

I dont think you know how the world works... anyone here.

I would like to believe that the offer was made on the back of a promise of some form of VC funding, probably many millions more than the $2.5 first instalment promised to Kent.

The VC funding didnt for whatever reason didn't turn up, probably because of the lawsuit over OS4 and hence they cannot pay.

I am sure it's not as sinister as it sounds.
