Video Toaster/Flyer to HDTV conversion?
« on: July 22, 2007, 11:50:22 AM »

 This is directed to you hardcore coders. Could a program be written that would convert Toaster Flyer video to HDTV? Especially since the code is available on the Open Toaster Source site. Think of how DCTV converts standard Amiga 4 bit and 8 bit plane images to 24 bit images on the fly. It be great upgrade. Would it be possible with out hardware updates? Since that is not likely to happen with the Amiga Toaster.Thanks
  :idea:  :-)

Not sure that would be doable. Toaster, DCTV and the native Amiga video output are NTSC. Up scaling this signal to HDTV would be like making a malted shake outta sour milk. Two completly different technologies in television sceince. The FCC has put NTSC on it's deathbed, forcing everyone to do some sort of upgrade to their home and professional video equipment. ie: new more expensive tv sets or HD to NTSC converter boxes. Which makes me belive that the signal can be converted down and not up...

not sure about that, word on the street is that is just converts it for you if it gets a differently aspect ratio.  Records the clip with black boarder.

@AmigaPixel,

Actually the DCTV worked its magic on either 3bit or 4bit, not 4bit and 8bit, Amiga images and animations depending on which setting was selected.  An amazing bit of hardware and software that was never fully taken advantage of.  3bit and 4bit animations could fly on an A3000 with a Warp Engine 040/40mHz.

Since most HDTV's will also display the older NTSC format, there is not much need or demand for a device that can convert the NTSC format to a HDTV signal.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

@AmigaPixel

Amigas can already out of the Box display 480i resolution in Wide screen.   Just use the SuperHiRes mode 1280 x 480 and make sure the gfx look squished on your 1084s Monitor..........when you display them in HDTV stretched out........it will look appropriate......where as if you were to use 720x480/640x400 and then displayed them on an HDTV, the gfx would look off and stretched out.  Amigas are freakin awesome is all I got to say. Because it can display this 1280x480 resolution on a TV very clearly as opposed to PC's and even the AmigaONE wich blur the heck out of the image.
CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

It's well possible to upscale the signal or videos to HDTV resolution and rate (with aspect ratio and borders or clipping, or with stretching), but the results would be really bad quality-wise.

Quite pointless exercise if you ask me.

If you'd mean to perform the conversion on amiga, it'd probably take months, literally. ;-)

Ooops! I new that! Yes DCTV is cool tool. All of my first animations were mostly done through DCTV. The colors always looked nice. I Also did my first morphing with Nova Design's Cine Morph. DCTV paint is about the only paint program that has really nice mixing palatte. The only one I know of on the pc is Bauhaus Mirage/Aura, not suprisingly developed by former Amiga programers. I still like the DCTV one better, it's easie to use

As leirbag28 said the Toaster Flyer is more than capable of rendering images in Lightwave at HD quality but the actual NTSC video can only be upconverted and will not improve the picture much but if you remember the old saying "garbage in garbage out" remember that if you started with a good hi quality NTSC video clip from a DV camera or DVD camera you might be surprised how good it looks upscaled to HD. I master to DVD all the time with my Flyer and the video looks great upconverted on my 53" HD display.
