LZX troubles
« on: June 19, 2007, 01:41:53 PM »
Hello all!

After a fair bit of tinkering and searching this forum I have admitted defeat. I need help.
I want to unpack LZX files on my real amiga but I am having no luck figuring out how to use 'unlzx'. I've read the instructions that come with it but I havn't been able to give it any commands that have worked yet. I'm obviously doing something wrong but the instructions seem to assume that the user has some previous knowlage in writing commands (which I do not have).
So please, can anyone either point me in the right direction for simple instructions or just tell me the exact commands I should be entering. Bare in mind that I have read the readme that comes with the unlzx program and I am still non the wiser.

Thanks in advance  :-)

Did you download the correct UnLZX? There are a few versions available on Aminet, and only one of them suits Classic AmigaOS: http://aminet.net/util/arc/UnLZX2.lha

The command line for extracting LZX archives should be nothing more than:

UnLZX -x archivename.lzx

Still no luck.
I feel like an idiot.
I have downloaded the version of unlzx you suggested. I have unpacked the unlzx.lha file into a drawer on a separate partition to the main system. Could that be a problem? Should i be placing the unlzx files in a certain location?
Asuming that it dosnt matter, am I right in thinking that to open a lzx archive once unlzx has been installed, i just have to double click on the lzx file i wish to open and then enter the "UnLZX -x archivename.lzx" command? if thats right then I must have ballsed up the unlzx installation. Im getting the error "UNLZX: Unknown command"
 :-(

The executable should be in the C directory, or anywhere else in the system's command-search path. If you don't know which directories are in the search path, take a look at the Startup-Sequence (using any text editor or viewer) and take note of the "Path" statement, all of those directories will be searched in the given order for the executable if you enter a command's name without specifying its location.

Just bung UnLZX into C.  :-)

Copy the unlzx command to the C drawer. Make sure it's called unlzx or else you have to type the command in the Shell the way it is called.

Pheew!
Just as I was starting to pull my hair out!
Turned out I had to type "UnLZX.000" before the command to get it working. Sorted.
Thanks folks.  :-D

If you rename unlzx.000 to unlzx then you can just type "unlzx" when you want to use the command.

Why don't you use a frontend gui like packmaster or something?
Much easier.
There are plenty on Aminet.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into that, but at the moment Im just pleased to have managed it at all. But as with most things, as soon as one problem is solved, another becomes apparent.
I should probably create a new thread for it tho unless its already been covered.
Running whdload games on a A600 with 2meg ram. It works fine for a few games, like turrican2, speedball 1&2, shadow of the beast1-3, Prince of Persia, but i cant get it to run some of my favs like Syndicate, MonkeyIsland 1&2, another world, flashback. Ive tried various versions and just figured that i needed a kickrom image from an a500 to run some of them, but after getting around that im now getting not enough ram messages.
Any tips or tweaks i could do to get the most from the ram? and or does anyone have a pcmcia fastram card they could sell?
