Help needed with A4000 video output problem
« on: September 11, 2007, 12:21:22 PM »
I have recently rescued an A4000 with a 40Mhz Warp Engine from being scrapped(!) and am quite excited to get a chance to experience some AmigaOS goodness. Sadly, however, there seems to be a problem with the video output. After getting a Amiga -> Scart cable and hooking it up to a TV I was disappointed to see this boot screen (Photoshop mock-up):

Where as it should of course look something like this:

Does this look familiar to anyone? Any suggestions what could be the problem? I do not know if the cable is at fault here, bought it second hand on eBay (listed as A1200 Scart cable), could it be that I have the wrong cable?

Grateful for any suggestions!

Lomax

Have you tried it on a different telly? (Just to rule it out)

Hello,

I have come across various SCART cables which cause this.

I have one SCART cable which displays the graphics OK but there is no sound, and I have another SCART cable which plays sound but doesn't display graphics. Tested on an Amiga CD32/SX1 combo.

You may need to buy a SCART cable from an Amiga dealer (UK AmigaKit) which are guarenteed to work with Amigas.

Kind Regards, Michael

I get the same picture on my A600 when the SCART isn't fully inserted into its socket.  As another poster says, try another TV or give your Amiga to me. :D hehe

Got that on a 1200 mobo, sent it to AmigaCenter which told me that the video chip was half dead... and it would cost more than a new mobo !

Thanks for all your suggestions! That the video card would be half dead seems (with my limited knowledge of electronics) unlikely. I'm gonna go with the assumption that my (cheap and old) TV doesn't handle RGB input properly and see if I can find another TV to test the Amiga on.

I think the Scart standard includes a composite video signal and that some devices only incorporate this interface, allthough they may have a standard Scart connector. I guess it's possible that the sync sent from the Amiga could be enough to generate the "ghost" image I'm seeing.

I'm not ready to give up on this machine yet as I'm much too keen to experience the legendary AmigaOS in all its glory!

Many thanks,

Lomax
