Action Replay
« on: May 28, 2007, 07:06:41 PM »
I read that an Action Replay cartridge connects to the Amiga's Zorro bus. However, the only versions I can find either connect to an A2000 CPU slot or the Zorro expansion on the side of an A500. Is there any version which would work with an A4000?

The only way to fit it in an A4000 would be to take the A500 version and build some sort of converter to fit it in a Zorro-slot. I've seen people who did this the other way around (to connect Zorro-II cards to the A500 side expansion slot), so it should be possible. AFAIK there never was an converting device to fit the cartridge in an actual Z-II slot.

So, the only option would be some DIY thing I guess...

So some kind of A500 expansion -> Zorro slot converter is required. Jens? :-)

Have found the Zorro II/III pinout here but I can't find the A500 expansion port pinout anywhere. Anyone know where I could find it?

I assume a converter would be as simple as connecting the pins from the A500 expansion side to the corresponding pins on the Zorro connector side. Or would there need to be some logic in between?

@Donar
You're right! It's here. I'll have a look at it. Anyone every used it? Does it really work? I don't see how a piece of software could work as well as a piece of hardware connected directly to the CPU bus (like the AR). Surely if the game turns off multitasking then the software would not be able to interrupt it?

Hmm looks like there is also HRTMon. In the readme it says "You can invoke the monitor at any point. Even if a game or a demo switched off the interrupts."

How does this work?!

With a hardware switch connected to NMI, obviously.

Obviously. Thanks for pointing out my idiocy.

Also, the HRTMon docs say that you can freeze the game and enter HRTMon using the right mouse button if you don't want to add the "level7 button". So the answer to the question "how does this work" is not quite as obvious as you claim.

I don't think it will work. my AR3 hates kickstart 3. And I heard they don't work with anything above 68000 cpu (except maybe the a1200 version). A500/2000 action replay is for a 68000/1.3 kickstart system.
I believe in mt. Fuji

Oh ok. Well it looks like a software solution is the way forward then. I'll give HRTMon a try when I have time.
