mips
« on: May 29, 2007, 12:42:01 PM »
Hi all,
Out ot the two cards an Apollo 1240 with 32 meg Fastram and an  Blizzard 030/50 with 32meg Fastram.

What is the mips for both cards?

It is obvious that the 040 at 25 Mhz willbe faster.
ASsI dont use my Amiga for games (well very few any way)
What would be the most stable out of the two?

Bearing in mind the Apollo will not have the scsi fitted but the Blizzard will have.

In your opinion what would you get knowing that info the Apollo 040/25 or the Blizzard 030/50?
As of yet I do not have any kind of scsi kit.
Would it be worth my while getting a scsi kit?  If of course I go the Blizzard.

Or will my best bet be an Apollo 040/25?
At the moment I am running an Apollo Turbo MkIII 030/40 with 32 meg Fastram.
TIA.

Mike.

Meaningless information, but the 68k FAQ answers that (search for 45460 )

Not necessarily all that obvious

If cooling was an issue, the '030 , but assuming you have your tower adequately cooled, the '040 heating shouldn't be an a problem.

Obviously depends on what other devices you'd plan on  adding. All IDE connectors used already ?

Since you already have a 68882 , I'd propably go with the '030. Then again, neither is that much of a jump from your 40MHz '030. 68060 would be. Depends a lot on what you do, the '040 may well be 2 to 3 times faster than the '030 in some operations.

10 to 15 years ago, if I had had the money, I would've gone with '040 in a heartbeat.

I would definitely go for the Blizzard, for 2 reasons:

1. SCSI. It's WAY faster/more stable than the A1200's onboard IDE. Plus you can add more stuff (CD-ROM, multiple harddrives etc. - you need to fill up that tower! :-) )
2. From my experience, a 25MHz 68040 has a very little speed advantage compared to a 50MHz 68030. Of course it depends on what you use it for, but if you're no hardcore speed-freak, the Blizzard is the way to go in my opinion.

Well am my stuff is IDE, I use a IDe`99 4 wae board no problems with that.
I use my Amiga mostly for Internet I use broadband via a router, and use AWeb and IBrowse latest version.
And AmiCad and PageStream 3.01b and Finalwriter 97.
Amplifier for my MP3`s and SongPlayer 1.3 (I find this more stable than 1.6)
So I am looking for the most stable and possibly fastest card.
I can not get an 060 I just dont have that sort of money to use.
So its either the Blizzard 030/50 or the 040/25.
Ram is not a problem as I have 2 x 32 meg sticks of 72 pin ram.
Now knowing that info what would you go for.
BTW, I have OS3.9 with both BB1 and BB2.
A LiteOn CD burner and a 52x CD rom.

AFAIK the Blizzard 030/50 is the best accelerator card ever produced for the A1200. (and the most compatible/reliable as well)
