stupid question about power supplies

        this is probably a very stupid question but will an original power supply for a A500 work with a A1200?

yes, but it may not be enough if your a1200 is loaded up. (hdd, accelerator, gfx card, etc.). in that case a normal a1200 psu won't be enough either anyway.

the 500 power supply is a little heavier duty than the original 1200 unit, but if you add accesories it is best to get a PC AT adapter to power the 1200.

Its not a stupid question, I got a 250 watt PC ATX PSU and modified it to adapt to the Amiga plenty of powere there I can tell you.
Or an AT PSU will do with an adapter to suit.

Its a good thing we can replace our Amiga PSU's with ATX power supplies because as we all know PSU's are very vulnerable. I have replaced my A1200 and my A2000 PSU's with ATX power supplies and now i won't run out of power  ;-)

The a500 psu is actually more powerful than the a1200 on, so it would actually be the better choice with a upgraded amiga. Though even the a500 on is too weak if you add too much to your a1200

if your power supply is busted and you have to source a new one, do the AT/ATX PS deal for your miggy. It's easy and cheap. At this point, for classic systems, i'd never replace a power supply with another original Amiga model unless I had another one lying around. To do otherwise would be a waste of money and time. Electrolytic caps don't last for ever and this hardware is old. Lots of good systems get tossed in the trash because of tired power supplies, do your self a favor and setup with a new one.
