Amiga M1438S monitor
« on: May 01, 2007, 08:51:06 AM »
Hi have just got this monitor, I'm using the dblpal driver from the wb 3 storage disk. Are there any other drivers I can use?

The refresh rate is quite low, 48khz, unless I switch to dblnstc, which gives 58khz.

Any advice? will I dammage the monitor if I experiment with different drivers?

thanks, rick.

Hi,

The good old 1438 is a re-badged Microvitec monitor - and these are proper multisyncs, going from PAL 15KHz modes up to 640x480 "Productivity" (and even 800x600 on a PC, though only at about 60Hz maximum refresh rate).

So experiment away! You shouldn't kill it, not with the native AGA chipset, anyway...

I think you mean 48Hz, not KHz...

Yes, it is low, but it's better than interlaced isn't it? You might try adjusting brightness/contrast to improve things (if such controls are available).

Super72 (I think) might offer what you need, if you don't require lots of lines vertical resolution. As noted by the previous reply, the AGA modes should not cause any problems but, if something makes it all go horrible (even squealy sounds from the monitor and no visible picture at all) then swiftly reboot. It is very unlikely that you will cause any damage if you are quick. (My Eizo 20-50KHz multiscan did not allow normal Amiga modes at all, and made horrid shrieking sounds at 15KHz, yet still it lasted for years...)

Make sure you press Use rather than Save in the Screenmode Prefs, until you are sure that everything is ok.

My favourite modes on the M1438S were Productivity/Multiscan (for word processing and other text reading tasks, due to its stable display), and the highest Super72 mode with lots of overscan for Workbench and other tasks requiring lots of screenspace.

The M1438S will handle all screenmodes bundled with your Workbench, except for the A2024 modes (which are hacked to only work with the 2024 screen). You can also download the HighGFX mode package from Aminet. I haven't managed to destroy the monitor by tweaking the screenmodes, and it has also worked with graphics card (although it's a waste of a monitor in that case).

I would be careful with different monitor drivers.  I think is IS possible to fry the monitor if you don't know what you are doing.  Standard monitor drivers found in the system should be able to be used without a problem, but if you start tweaking them yourself without more knowledge or guidance, you might harm the monitor.

Good luck, finding the information you are seeking should not be difficult.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)
