A520 RGB adapter
« on: June 03, 2003, 07:53:46 AM »
Hi,

I have sold my A4000, and now I am back to my old A500 (never thought I would ever fire it up again) but I have a A520 adapter connected to it so I can connect it to the tv through the video in rca connecters on the television,  I have just one question as I have neer used the A520 befor,

Q:  After pluging the A520 into the RGB port of the amiga, then connecting the RCA cable to the video out on the A520, and pluging the other end of the RCA connector into the video in on the tv, AM I SUPPOSE TO GET A COLOR PICTURE?
There was a time I can remember computers were fun...I miss my A1200.

You should have colour, yes.

I only have experience with the PAL-version, which had two output connectors: marked "video out" and "rf out".

I used the output "RF OUT".
I think "video out" was for generating a monochrome signal, however I have never used that output port.

Hagar,

ok the connector to the RF out is RCA type, the connector for the antenna in on my tv is a Coax type, what do I use to make a connection?

Depends... Same similar to playstation.

Might have something to do with PAL into NTSC TV or VicaVersa.

NTSC Game running on a PAL playstation using composite video (Not RGB) will come out in Grey.

@JurassicCampe

my 500 is NTSC and the kickstart (insert disk animation) comes up all in black and white and when I boot from the hard drive, its still in b/w,

I dont know what type of wire runs from the RF out to the composit in on the tv, also why would the video out connection be in black and white?

If my memory is correct, there is a small slide-switch on the back of the A520 that can be adjusted between two positions.  You'll need to look hard to find it as it should be by the TV out socket.

Try adjusting the switch (assuming it is present on NTSC A520s).

The A520 has 3 Phono connectors.
Your interested in.

Back RF (60Hz NTSC in your Case)

Here you got "RF" to your "RF" input on your TV

Side Composite

Composite Video -  Composite Video to either a Scart or Phono / BNC connectors on your TV

Audio In - Y  single to dual phono lead to the back of the A500

The A500 also has a mono video output as the last connector on the back.

Have you got a NTSC 500 but a PAL or SECAM modulator ?

The small black slider switch next to the RF out connector is a Channel Selector switch-it matches the TV channel on the TV set for viewing computer display( L=5,5MHz,  H=6 MHz)

Hummm...

So is there any way (anybody?) to get A1200 composite video output in color?  The MB compo out is grayscale, with an A520 I also get only grayscale.  For what it's worth, my A1200 is a PAL model (ordered from Germany, if I recall correctly) so I have to use early startup every reboot to switch to NTSC, and the MB TV out doesn't work at all (probably 'cause it's PAL).

Haven't hooked it up in years, but seems to me my A500 did output a composite signal in color...

That is because you have a PAL A1200 and a NTSC, thats why it´s black and white. Isn´t there someway to set PAL/NTSC in hardware??? there where hacks for the A500, i think
What do you mean by

the MB TV out doesn't work at all

Is it the composite video out or RF???
Pal on ntsc should always give a blackn white picture as should ntsc on pal, if you don´t get that then the connector or modularor probably is broken

That's the RF that doesn't work at all, or gives just some wavey lines, something like that (it's been years).  Presumably because it's PAL output was choking my NTSC television set.

I'd be interested in hearing more about this hack to set the machine to NTSC.  Last time I looked into it AFAIR it was some horribly complicated thing that involved soldering some pins, wires, etc., on the motherboard.  Aagh why Commodore why couldn't you just put a jumper setting??  ;-)

Also can you give me more info on this "Pal on ntsc should always give a blackn white picture as should ntsc on pal," - is that just the way it is, or is there some logic in the video system behind it?  Are you saying that if I had a genuine NTSC A1200 MB I'd get a color composite out on my NTSC video hardware?

Thank you very much.
