Flatbed scanner on serial port of A-1200?
« on: January 25, 2007, 04:11:59 PM »
Does anyone have any experience using a color flatbed scanner on the serial port of their Amiga? If so, would you share the experience and what type of software is needed.
Thanks all!....Ciao!...Tony

Fraid not wa9yoz. I did however use a parallel port scanner for a long time.

WA9YOZ,

I think that fxSCAN from IOSPIRIT GmbH (http://www.iospirit.de) might be able to do it because you can set the device in its preferences menu.

Why don't we get together & I could try to help you out.  I've got an HP Scanjet IIc that has a SCSI interface that I can give you for free, it you want it.  I've replaced it with an HP Scanjet 4c.

We're pretty close to each other, relatively speaking, & we're both licensed amateur radio operators.  :-D

Send me a PM here on Amiga.org if you're interested.

Thanks for da info!...my next experiment/challenge is to use a (PC) parallel scanner on the A-1200 parallel port...something to do & keep me out of bars..LOL..
One more thing: Is it true that one is NOT to use "PC" type of parallel cable with the Amiga's parallel port?
Last, which type of software were you using for the parallel flatbed scanner...thank you for your time!..Tony

Thank you all for the info...one more question:
If I use "Silver Surfer" connect to the serial scanner, would that increase the scanning speed?...just curious..I like to experiment, just like most of us radio amateur & Amiga users do...besides, keeps me from going to bars..LOL! :-?

You may want to do some reading on "Serial" "Parallel" and "SCSI" ports, as there seems to be some confusion here between the three.
"baud rate" is (in simple terms) the data transfer speed through the serial port - iirc Silver Surfer has something like 460800 bps baud rate, whereas the amiga in-built will just about manage 57600 on a good day (and this could be an overestimate). So yes, the silversurfer would be significantly faster.

Either way you cannot attach a parallel scanner to a serial port.  Well, maybe you can given the right cable, but the burning smell might make you want to unplug it pretty fast.

Also, probably not a good idea to connect a scsi scanner to a parallel port either.
Mac Mini G4 (1.5GHz, 64MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.6
Powerbook 5.8 (15", 1.67GHz, 128MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.8.

Windows-free since 2011-2014 (Damn you Netflix!)

I will have to have a look what the parallel port software was. I think I got it with an Epson GT5000 from 'Power Computing' in the UK. It worked a treat, and I've probably still got the software (but not the scanner).
