Hi,

@iamaboringperson ,

HaHaHa, How can you say the Amiga 4000 is a serious computer when it died 10 years ago. Break down an buy a clone computer and then see what real computing power is about.

@scientist

Ok lets go through this with the A1200 computer. I am using a pc power supply to power my A1200. To do this I cut off the power cord from my Amiga's power supply, then I checked the books to get the proper pins to so that I could hook up the pc power supply to the Amiga power cord and get the right voltages to the right inputs.  First problem solved.

Then I removed the board and put it in an Xerox word processing case that I bought from gov. surplus, this case was big enough to fit the power supply in and the A1200 motherboard. 2nd problem solved.

Then I took a look at the IDE interface on the A1200 the interface is actually a pc laptop interface which uses a smaller plug then a regular ide interface, this interface also has power connections for a 5 volt supply to power the ide harddrive from a laptop.  Contacted software hut and they had the proper ide plug for a crossover from a laptop drive to a regular 3 1/2 inch ide drive  3rd problem solved.

Now comes the biggest problem the damn keyboard which uses a flat ribbon cable to hook up in the A1200, this flat ribbon cable is about 4 to 5 inches long and runs from the keyboard to the Amiga 1200 motherboard. I believe if I remember right it had 32 wires in it, but don't take my word for it, it has been a long time. Now you can take out the old socket and solder in a 32 wire cable from mother board to a special socket connector attached to the computer case and then a special socket attached to 32 wires on the keyboard (female, male connector). This was my first solution that I tried and was a real pain. The second solution is to visit the Aminet boards and lookup some files that tell you how to make a 5 wire connector like the Amiga 3000 / 4000 and then hook up a Amiga 3000 / 4000 keyboard, This is the method I finally used on mine. You can also buy the connector from software hut, (if they still exist). 4th problem solved.

Now after I did done all the mentioned above my A1200 was equipped with a 603e 210 mhz ppc / 68040 / 40 mhz board  then upgraded to 64 megabyte of ram, a 10 gig harddrive and a 52 X cdrom drive, OS 3.5 and then OS 3.9, a zorro slot card for my Picasso II card and my GVP IV24 card all hooked up into an A1200  as Tim Allen would say Who Who Who this is a real mans computer.

Then about 3 years ago smoke poured out of the back and it all wound up in the trash and I went out and bought a pc clone and installed winuae on it.  5th problem solved.

Have fun compootin,
Smerf
I have no idea what your talking about, so here is a doggy with a small pancake on his head.

MorphOS is a MAC done a little better

Dont bother with Ateo tower It is no more & limits you to having what it already has.

The ELBOX POWERTOWER or the new ELBOX MIRAGE allow you to have more choice.

Check my info at the bottom.
PowerTower A1200,060/80Mhz,Heatsink&Fan,66MBRam,PowerFlyerGold,50xCDRomdrive,250Zip,2.1GB&34GB HD,internal Scandoubler & FF,19\\"Monitor,Mediator,Voodoo3-3000,PaceSolo 56k ,PortJnr2,ZEKeys-XS,SMON ,Os3.9

Well as long as it's not any of the Infinitiv-crap its ok. Ateo's keyboard adapter is excellent, the tower was cheap, and it's sturdy.
That said, PicassoIV connected to A1200's zorro didn't fit to the tower, as PIV is such gigantic card.

I have an a4000 tower here stupid thing dont work though when switch on from cold it sometimes goes grey to white screen  then back to black ive stripped it and checked everything even tried freezing the chips to see if it was them only thing i can see is some soldering on the resistors is dodgy or the resistors have died which is what i reckon is wrong with it or the cpu card is no good .Im not sending the board off to analogic till i know the cpu card is ok.this thing had a new motherboard that cost 300 pound so the last owner reckons.

never had this much trouble with my blizzard ppc a1200 tower :-)
I once had an amigaone xe but sold it .

Hi welcome back to the Amiga fold!

Now lets get down to business upgrading your 1200.
As your 1200 is in its old desktop case you are slightly limited as to what you can do to upgrade.

Upgrading your operating system: Is the current OS that comes with the 1200 OS3.0 or 3.1? if it is 3.1 then you have version 3.1 ROMs and  you can upgrade to the latest AmigaOS version 3.9.

See:
http://os.amiga.com/3.9/?PHPSESSID=b0e4ed00ac9b9e958dc908ae0411c310

(This comes on a CD so you will need a CDRom (see later)).

Towering your 1200: There are afew tower systems for your 1200 such as Elbox`s PowerTower or the newer Mirage Tower system and Eytechs Z4 tower. Elboxes towers provide a cable which converts the At power plugs to the Original power supply plug that goes in to the 1200 power port. Im not sure about Eytechs towers

See:
http://www.elbox.com/products/mirage_1200.html
AND
http://www.elbox.com/products/e_box_1200.html

Adding CDRom and HardDrives: You can do this with the original 1200 port but you risk blowing out the Motherboard as the port is NOT buffered. There are a few different ways of expanding the port you can use either an IDE splitter or A PowerFlyer (from Elbox) which greatly speeds up hardrive access. Both of these solutions alows you to add upto 4 devices on the ports e.g. 2 HardDrives and 2 CDRoms. To add these dives thpugh its best to get a tower for the space and the power supply it can give you. To add the devices you need the correct cabling which can be bought cheeply from any PC supplier. (The cabling needs to be 3 way with 40 holes for the pins)

See:
http://www.elbox.com/products/fast_ata_1200.html
AND
http://www.powerc.com/cgi-bin/psearch.cgi?code=635-0005&rn=39&aid=&uid=ssWNnrgkR/6oGts&sid=&cid=4&act=gpage

You add your Hardrive to the fist port through the cable with its Jumpers set to Master and the CDRom can go on the last cable port on the same cable with its jumpers set as Slave. You connect there power with the ones provided with the tower At supply.

Problems with HardDrives: Previous Amiga OS`s could not use Hardrives great than 4 Gig so if your not planing to upgrade your OS to 3.9 then yopu can only use a 4 Gig HardDrive with your 1200.

Adding an Accelerator Card: I am assuming that the 1200 only has its original 020 processor? This is no way near powerfull enough in the Amiga Market today and you should consider upgrading to a least an 040 40MHz or an 060 50MHz. These now depending on the model of card allow you to add more memory to your Amiga via SIMMs either EDO or FPS. Depending on the card you can add either 674 or 128 MB of memory in 2 Simms.
I would recomend a Viper 060 50MHz processor from PowerComputing in the UK or Vesalia In Germany(?)

See:
www.Powerc.com
AND
www.Vesalia.de

They sell both the Accelerators and Memory

These cards add on to the "Trap Door" expansion port which when your 1200 is towerd you can see clearly at the "top" of the motherboard. Just be carefull when sliding the card onto the conectors that you dont damage them.

Using PC Monitors: Unless you have a good television using a th original RF cable is going to hurt your eyes after awhile. If you just want to use a television then I sudgest getting a scart cable for your Amiga from a suitable vendor as this will improve the picture quality. But it will not be as good as using a PC monitor. Unless you have access to a MultiSync Monitor the only 2 otpions available are the purchase of a sandoubler and flicker fixer (Internal/External) or the use of a graphics card with which you will need to buy a PCI expansion board.

If you need any more help such as sudjestions to adding PCI expansion ports and related PCI cards just contact me over PM and I will send you a text file with all this info on and more!.

If someone tels me how I will try and make it into an AmigaGuide file on 1200 Upgrading.

Bye for Now

Mark

Prowed 1200 owner :-D
Escom A1200, Power Tower, OS3.9 & BB2, HD-Floppy drive, Mediator PCI, Voodoo 3 3000 16MB, Soundblaster 4.1, TV Tuner Card, 10/100MBit Ethernet card, Apollo 68060 66MHz with 64MB, 9.5Gig HD and 52xCDRom

Also one spare unworking bare A1200

how did it die? mine still goes, i still use it and it probably has more life than yer average 1200

i do have some ibm-pc machines that i use alot also - not as much fun as my A 4000 T

BTW - it was made in 1995, thats 8 years ago, are you suggesting it died before it was even made?

mine works!(except the keyboard) i would still prefer my A 4000 T to yer 1200 (yucky) tower

Quite a while back, I seem to remember seeing an A1200 for sale that the owner had installed a CDrom drive from a laptop in.  It was really slick.  Seems to me the CDrom drive was on the left side of the machine, very neatly done.  I was impressed with how it turned out.  Maybe someone else has seen this and can give you more info.  Good luck, and welcome back!
