CD32 game conversions
« on: November 09, 2006, 12:40:53 PM »
Hi all,
I finaly have a working CD32 console and am I a happy puppy!!
I've bought a few original games to play, but I was wondering if it's possable to convert some of my old 500 and 1200 games to play on the CD32?
Is it as simple as burning them to CD? (I doubt it!) Is it possable at all? (could be!?) Is there anyone out there can help me? (I very much think so!!)
I look forward to your replies!
Kindest regards,
AmigaSev.

I beleive you need to have certain files only availiable off the Amiga SDK cd to enable cds to autoboot.

Somebody might prove me wrong here.

if a game would install to HDD or the A500 disk was dos and you can see the files, there is a chance that you can get them to run on a cd32.

If you buy an SX-1 and hook up an extral 3.5" disk drive, you can play most A500 games as if you were running them on an A1200.

For great knowledge: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SDK

Shorter version: Software Development Kit, Basically load of APIs and occasionally hardware that allows developers to code for a particular system. Mainly used in reference to consoles these days e.g.: a PS3 SDK or Xbox360 SDK.

In this case, the SDK is referring to a specific CD that was distributed with a development environment.  I forget the exact name of the CD, I know I have one sitting in storage.

Anyhow, it contained the specifications for how the Amiga CD filesystem was to be layed out to be bootable.  A variation of the ISO9660/Rock Ridge boot, IIRC.  Basically, the files required are all the same stuff you need to boot an Amiga up from an HD (s:startup-sequence, the c: dir and tools, etc.).  The custom part is in how you burn the CD.

You can use MakeCD to create a bootable CD32/CDTV CD.  You'll need a cdtv.tm (or cd32.tm).  It's best to test things in WinUAE to make sure everything works before wasing any CD-Rs.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(
