cables needed to link an amiga nad a pc
« on: May 19, 2003, 09:11:33 AM »
Hi all,
I want to link a P200 to my A1200PPC, so that I could play over a local network amigagames through UAE. I dont have any ethernet card on my amiga (but the pc does) but I could get my hand on a few cables but dont know which one is the most suitable.
I got DB9 female-female crossed, DB25 male-male crossed or not, DB9-DB25-coupled female-female.

;-) Try checking Aminet for networking software.  The documentation for the software you decide to use will explain your options regarding cables.

The Amiga's serial port is 25 pin male. PCs are usually 9pin male. You need a 25 pin female to 9 pin female nullmodem cable. Best get a laplink - they have both sizes of connector on each of the ends so you won't have any config trouble.

And...good luck on using UAE on a P200. My P200 is nowhere near fast enough to run it. The timing on UAE is pretty screwed too so you might have problems syncing the serial link. Then again, this problem might already be fixed.

A serial link should be good enough for old games with serial options, just don't expect to use Samba or FTP on it.

thanks, I see what I can do. I have an adaptor 9/25 which I used to connect my modem to but since I got a VarIO card I no longer need it.
My question was mainly about using crossed cables or not (like crossed RJ45)
Thanks anyway.
For UAE, I konw P200 is limit but to emulate A500 I guess it is enough with a voodoo2. I also have alphastation255 at 233Mhz on which I could run Uae as well but at first I have to install debian on it (unsuccessfull until now, can not partition the hd, because I dont have alphabios but srm)

You MUST use a crossed cable (i.e. a nullmodem cable). If you use a straight one you will destroy the chips in your Amiga.

You're welcome. Just one more warning - your computers should be turned off before you attach serial cables, especially the Amiga.

hi,

I link my amigas (2000, 3000 and 500) wit a laplink cable.  Using am2ps as the transfer program (see aminet).  Got for me the best result in connecting them.  One can see each others drive, and  just copy files to them.

I haven't used it on my a1200 yet, for that one I have a pcmcia network card laying around, but not tested it yet.

I don't know it that alpha is fast enough...
However I've got an even older Alpha (with srm) with debian succesfully installed. If you want to, I could try to find out exactly what I did to get debian installed.
