Current state of classic Amiga hardware
« on: July 24, 2007, 09:37:07 AM »
Hi, all!
I've been thinking about getting me some "new" Classic Amiga hardware, but after having a look at the various resellers' websites, it seems that the availability of hardware is rapidly declining.

Finding computers is not really a problem, as it seems as if there's plenty of NOS systems around, and it's always easy to find used miggies in garage sales, flea markets, etc.

Accessories, on the other hand, are increasingly difficult to come by, and it doesn't look like it's getting better anytime soon.

So, is there anyone producing accellerators, and other peripheral hardware for Amigas. There is of course Individual computers and Elbox. Are there any others left?

In particular, acceleration cards with 68060 are hard to find these days - I've been looking for a Blizz-1260 for quite some time now. I see lots of 040+PPC aroun, but I really just need the 060 for my linux/m68k projects  :-)

No they are not.

One or two come up on ebay every week!

It's just they are expensive. You've been looking out for a cheap 060. Be honest ;-)

Demand outstrips supply, while not rare they will never be cheap.

Unfortunately the demand is too low for a production run of a new 060 accelerator. It's too much of a financial risk.

Sorry, but the Apollo boards are not usable for me, they have timing issues that makes them very unreliable for linux/m68k. Only the Phase5/DCE cards work correctly.

Also, I really dont feel like buying an entire system - though the price for that one blizzard system you found seems ok so far. Thanks for pointing it out :-)

Every Amiga hardware is worthwile. There are lots of people who would swap their 060 board for a 040/PPC card since you can upgrade them to full 060, however it seems people want the SCSI version of BlizzardPPC more.

I think it would really be worth conducting some more thorough market research to see exactly how much demand there is. Not just a "Would you be interested in...?" kind of poll, but a "I am intent on purchasing..." registration thingy.

I'd guess that accelerators, graphics cards, and another run of Algors would probably be worth producing.

Aye!
An "all-in-one" upgrade for the A1200 (with video+audio+CPU+IDE/SATA) is definitely possible with modern technology, and I'm quite certain that there's a demand for such a product, even if it wouldn't be cheap.
