Is there enough interest in the Amiga Guru book in English?
« on: April 03, 2006, 01:01:35 PM »
I'd posted a couple want-ads recently looking for the Amiga Guru book written by Ralph Babel. This programming reference book, like most other decent ones for the Amiga, is very difficult to locate and the prices are often sky high on Ebay when they do become available. A few people wrote to tell me the German version is being published once again (see here for info). I'm glad to see that somebody out there is willing to continue to print reference books for the few die-hard Amiga programmers that remain. But this book is in German, and unfortunately, I don't read or speak German. I'm stuck with English.

The other day, I received a different type of reply in my email. This one suggested that if enough people were to contact the owner of the store, and request the English version, maybe the owner would see the potential sales and reprint the English version. Of course, it'd probably help if we were willing to pre-order a copy to speed things along. And more than likely, the prices of the new book would be considerably cheaper than what the book has been going for on Ebay.

I already sent my email expressing interest in an English version, and said I would be willing to pre-order a copy. If you're interested in an English version, too, please do the same. It seems this is the only way to get new things for the Amiga: let our voices be heard. The email address to the owner is below.

Thanks!
-David

Seems odd they would first reprint the German version and then based on sales consider the English. The English version is going to surely get more sales than the German version anyway, unless of course 99% of all Amiga Users live in Germany/Austria which surely can't be right.

That is what I thought originally, too. I just got a response back; he said he'd had 14 contacts today. His English doesn't seem to be too good, so I'm trying to explain to him that 14 in one day is a very good indication of the interest. And I'm trying to find out just how much interest is enough interest. What is the magic number?

Hahaha. Seriously, those of us who have written, should hear some info in 2-3 weeks about a pre-order if we've managed to convince them an English edition is a good business idea. Way to go! :)

There is an Amiga Guru Book info file in English on Aminet called gurubook-info.lha which might be interesting for those who would like to know the content :-)

Any news on this? I'd like to get hold of a copy as I'm trying to get details on the dos.library functions.
