What upgrades to go for?
« on: August 24, 2006, 06:52:11 AM »
I've been thinking about upgrading my Amiga for quite some time. I'm just a little lost at how.
I'm considering the mediator board and later a sharkppc acellerator whenever that becomes available. Or even climbing a pegasos and fly off. Thing is I want Amiga O.s4.0 and that seems to be a real problem.
Hardware either won't be released until os.4.0 surfaces or, in the case of pegasos, just won't be supported.
What then is the better way out? What are the pros and cons of each alternative? The Amiga is amazing, it would be great if I could use it for music production. Just need a little more power first.

Current sys: A1200, 68040@40Mhz, Os3.9.

I'm assuming you have an A1200?

If you want to stick with OS3.x, then you can get a Mediator and a 68k/PPC accelerator. This will also allow you to run MorphOS on your Amiga.

If you want to run MorphOS a lot faster get a Pegasos, but then you lose classic compatibility unless you use UAE on the Peg.

If you really want OS4 then you will have to try to get hold of a second hand A1, or wait and see if any upgrades for the A1200 are released which will let you run OS4 on it.

--EDIT
Mediator isn't compatible with MorphOS. If you want to run MorphOS on a classic Amiga then you need a G-Rex.

Are there any good audio\midi sequencers with morphOs support? What's a G-Rex, never heard of it- and I call myself an Amigan... Gee!

Not sure about audio software for MOS, I'm not a MOS user (yet!). G-Rex is a PCI bus for the Amiga, similar to the Mediator. It is supported by MorphOS on classic Amigas.

 :-D  look at amiga-hardware.com
GREX is also supported under OS3.x, but it needs a "compatible" BPPC (rev2 or rev0 upgraded).
Digibooster works with MOS, and some other that work with RTG with MOS powerUp for Classic due to the Paula DMA presence. :rtfm:
Keep the Faith !
