Ethernet for an A1200
« on: August 01, 2006, 06:17:46 PM »
I would like to connect my A1200 into an ethernet switch unit, so that it would be possible to access my pee see (it has useful peripherals) and, possibly, go webbing with it. The ethernet switch is also connected to a DSL router.

I have previously (read a decade or so ago) made a Parnet cable set (courtesy of instructions provided by the Software Distillery) and used to use it to connect an A1200 to an A500+/A570CDROM. It worked very well, giving the A1200 a remote CDROM, and it would be nice to have something approaching that degree of functionality, if possible, through ethernet.

I do not necessarily know how to configure the software side of network thingies, but please rest assured that if anyone can explain in English then I am likely to be able to follow clear instructions.

Opinions, advice, recommendations, etc., are welcome.

Important computer specs: A1200 with 700MB 2.5" DH0: and a Blizzard 1230 MkIV 68030/50MHz/16MB.

Less important computer specs: a pee see.
:)

PCMCIA network card would be ideal in this case.
3com driver, NE2000 compat driver, Prism II compat WLAN driver. Each has list of compatible devices included.

You'll also need TCP/IP. You can buy 3rd party Miami or Genesis, or go free route with GPL AmiTCP/IP. Installation instructions for the latter: AmiTCP 3.0b2 Installation guide

I have a spare 10/100 PCI ethernet card, and would not be averse to a little hardware hackery (safeish stuff only) if it meant the miggy could use PCI cards, or even ISA come to that.

Would this, ultimately, be better (more useful, potentially expandable, fun, etc.) or would you still recommend the PCMCIA interface for this particular job?

Time and effort are not the most critical factors, money is of some concern.

@meega

"a little hardware hackery (safeish stuff only)" does not really apply to adding PCI or working ISA slots to the Amiga.

Buying a cheap $10 PCMCIA ethernet card is much easier.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

I hadn't realised they were that cheap.. Just checked on ebay and yes, many such things at low prices.. even wireless..

Thanks.

Please post more replies along the lines of nuts, bolts, cables, cards 'n' solder, if anyone wants to discuss hardware matters - I am thinking of Frankensteining one of the migs..
