603 / 604 questions
« on: July 17, 2006, 11:05:30 AM »
Hi. I have 2 questions about these CPUs:
Why did they made a 604 based accelerator for the Amiga 4000 but not for the Amiga 1200? Is there a technical reason for this?
How much faster a 604 performs from a 603 CPU?
A1200 PPC user.

at 200MHz, the 604 is ~27 MIPS faster BUT the a4000 because of it's design allowed for a more faster ppc subsystem, so all benchmarks regarding memory read/write etc, are 2X the speed on the 4000... a 604 on the 1200 would not help...
so the conclusion is that the A4000/3000 CPU slot is faster and more efficient than the 1200 cpu slot...
also the 1200 lacks many components the 3000/4000 have...

CS PPC has 64bit memory, BPPC 32bit. That's why CS PPC has 2x memory speed.

AFAIK the reason for 603 only for BPPC is temperature considerations, and PCB real-estate. Even as-is with 603, the BPPC is unbeliveably crammed.

I don't know why I guess it was just cheaper and the A1200 was an entry Amiga. The 604 has double L1 cache and really outperformce the 603 but as they don't have L2-Cache on the Amiga cards they are a bit braked. A 604 at 233 MHz gives you up to 54% more power than the 603 at 200 Mhz.

Damn! I never thought that there was such big difference in performance. :-(  Oh well... :-)

I had a BPPC with 175Mhz 603e and later sold my A1200 and got a CSPPC 150Mhz.  I was very surprised how much faster it was (in emulators, games, benchmarks) even though it was slower Mhz it was at least half as fast again as the BPPC.  604 is a very nice processor, even beating faster G3's in many tasks.

The 604 was also known as a Monster. But the most performance boost in the Amiga gives you the 64bit memory against the slower 32bit memory on bppc.

The 604 has also a better FPU.
