PCMCIA card for fastram
« on: June 16, 2006, 08:30:40 PM »
Hallo!
My amiga 1200 have to the place of heart an 1240/40mhz blizzard accelerator card with 64mb ram. But sometimes for compatibility reassons I use the blizzard disable key "2".
This key disable the 040 prossesor but together disable all my 64mb fastram
The remaining ram to my system is only 1200kb chipram (because I have many partitions to my HD and eats lot ram) I thing the only solution for my is to use my free pcmcia slot of my amiga for 2-4mb ram expansion. I have test a sundisk 5mb card from my HP200LX palmPC-XT but unfortunally isn't compatible.
I'm looking for compatible cards to ebay, but I don't know what kind cards is compatible for Amiga. I found many cards but witch is the right type for me? :-?
Please help, I want to know before buy a wrong card.

Look for SRAM or PSRAM cards.  Don't get anything that says Flash.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

making tons of partitions is a stupid custom habit of some amiga users..it's a waste of memory and resources
PC and MAC users don't have that stupid habit
leave alone the cigarette and leave alone this stupid habit

( Edited by Admin: Personal Attack) and make only 1 partition on your hardisk and use on it only 300 buffers.....is enough
you will see that you will have 1.95 free memory chip ram
pcmcia ram cards are slow and obsoletes and maybe incompatibles with your turboboard

bye, Laser

(Admin Note: Many Amiga users have mulitple partions on their drives to lessen the effects of disk invalidation)

Well, by using Fblit, I have 1.93 free chip with two partitions on OS3.9, with 128-colour icons on AGA with my 030 @ 40 w/32mb setup.  Partitions do use up some chipram, but it's more necessary on the Amiga to have multiple partitions.  >4gb drives require more than one partition otherwise any space above the 4gb barrier is lost.
Also, Amigas themselves are slow and obsolete, so it's hardly a valid point that pcmcia ram is slow.  I'm sure he already knows this.  However, seeing as you put it so succinctly, and so politely, I'm sure you must be right

so then you'll have 4Mb RAM? (is that real RAM or just a flash HDD?)
Better sorry than worry.

That one will work. That was really cheap though. :-) It's not unusual to see 2 Mb SRAM cards go for around $100 on ebay these days.

Thank you all for you support. I want this card only for emergency reasons, no matter if is slow. I'll use it when I dissable my blizzard for running an old game and this game wants more ram or fastram.

Hey, no need to defend your purchase. Despite what some people say, I think it's better to have slow RAM than no RAM at all.

I have the 4MB version of that card also and it works fine.  The PCMCIA is about the speed of Chip RAM so it's slow, but definately usable for games and such.
