Upgrading a Warp Engine 4028
« on: June 14, 2006, 12:06:00 AM »
I got a Warp Engine 4028 with an A4000 recently, and I've got a spare 68040 CPU @33 or 40mhz sitting on a shelf at home. I was wondering, can I just swap out the CPU and the Crystal, set the memory speed jumper to 60 or 70ns (Depending on whether it's a 33 or 40 chip) and be done?

Here's the card at the Big Book:
http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=257

The reason I even ask this silly question is because my first accelerator ever was a 25mhz 68030 card from GVP for my A2000 some 11 years ago, and I had a 50mhz 68030 CPU and crystal laying around at the time so I swapped them out and the board flat died.

Luckily I was able to send it in to GVP and have them fix it and make it work ok. They said you couldn't just swap out the CPU and Crystal on their board to upgrade it without some modification.

I don't want to make that mistake again, so if anybody has any experience with the Warp Engine cards I'd appreciate any input!

Thanks,
Jack

Quoted directly from the link I submitted:

All that is required to convert a 28 MHz Warp Engine into a 33 MHz or 40 MHz Warp Engine is to replace the oscillator and processor (although memory SIMMs slower than 60 ns may require jumpering jumper D to enable a wait state).

So yay me for finding the answer, and dang me for not fully reading the link there before I posted!

Funny thing is, I put the link in there just so people would know what card I was talking about. LOL
