Wireless Netgear MA401 setup etc
« on: June 12, 2006, 05:42:00 PM »
Hi, I have bought a 16bit netgear MA401 wireless PCMCIA card.

I cannot seem to get wireless internet up and running.

I have plugged the card into my pcmcia port.

Then installed prism2.

I then open the shell and type:

SetPrism2Defaults SSID **** KEY ****** CHANNEL **

(*s used instead of real info)

I am using genesis tcp/ip stack. I run the wizard selecting prism2.device on device number 0. Then it says do you need a special config, I click yes. Then it requests a prism20.config. I cant find this. And then later on I get a device prism2 on device 0 cannot be found

This didnt happen earlier in the day when I tried it.

I also tried to install cardreset patch (is this needed?) but After adding the lines CardPatch and CardReset in the startup I get errors about CardPatch is not a valid command and it gives me a returncode of 10.

Any advice would be great,

It's requesting a special config for the Sana2 driver - a config file for prism2.device, unit 0. prism20.config would be found in ENV:Sana2 or ENVARC:Sana2. The fact that it's not there probably means that you don't need it - not all Sana2 drivers use configs in that format. Don't click yes when it asks for a special config.

Make sure the Execute bits are set on CardPatch and CardReset.

I think the SSID command needs to be run in User-Startup. Or at least before opening the TCP stack.

Hmm, I have never done that, and my Netgear works without any problems. What good will it do by adding it?

card reset? none that i know of. i just pull the card out and push it back in again...

anyway,
don't you need the "MANAGED" tooltype for setprism2defualts? i am assuming that you are connecting to a router? or some form for wireless access point?

everything else is the same as mine, except i switched off WEP and all other wireless security on my router, and set the router to only except wireless connections based on trusted MAC addresses. not a problem since.

i think i got WEP to work a couple of times, but it was a pain getting it to work with my G/F's laptop. get it working with the laptop, and it would stop working with my miggy. so i found trusted MACs a better solution.

basicly just keep trying. you may need to force the router to 11mb, as i had problems with it running a dual signal of 11/54mb, and untill you can get it connected, take all the security off so you can rule that out of the question too.

IIRC mine is,
setprism2defaults SSID **** CHANNEL 6 MANAGED

oh yeah, make sure the SSID doesn't have spaces, or weird characters in it. try to keep it a-z, A-Z, 0-9. it is also case sensative.

you were trying to run a special config in the TCP/IP stack setup? you shouldn't need to do that as setprims2defaults does that for you for the wireless stuff.

good luck!

A500, A600, A1200x3, A2000, A3000, A4000 & a CD32.
and probably just like the rest of you, crates full of related "treasure" for the above XD

No, MANAGED is the default. You only need to specify it if you've previously used ADHOC since the last reboot. I don't think the original poster's problem is with the settings though. The driver will still open if the wireless parameters are incorrect.
