A1200 HD CD-Rom doesn't boot anymore!!!
« on: June 12, 2006, 12:14:42 AM »
Hi,

can anybody help me please?

I bought a brand new A1200 with internal HD linked to
a CD Rom. The problem is that when I tried to disconnect
the cables from the mainboard of the HD and the CD Rom
my loved A1200 down't boot anymore. I tried to plug the cable wich is |------------|-| in all the position but
the computer doesn't boot. I did this to learn how to install the OS on HD after a format and to learn to mount a CD Rom with IDEFix. What could be happened?
A part of this cable is a normal Cd cable while the other part has two connections and the cable of one of it is a little shorter ( maybe 44 --- 40 ) but I do not understand what to do!!!
Can anybody help me?
I would very appreciate it!

Hi Daniele. Could you be a little more clear. How were the HD and CD connected? Normally, new 1200's only come with a HD. With the addition of an IDEsplitter, a CDdrive can be connected too. What kind of CDrom is it? Internal or external? What happens when no HD or CDrom is connected.

Hi amiduffer,

well , the A1200 had a cable with 3 socket one larger
concected to an external cd rom with its power supply,
then the other 2 sockets where connecten one to the
A1200 motherboard and one to the internal HD.
I don't know the correct position of these last socket because even if they have the same size one seems to have
less pins covered.
Can u help me?

By the way. Is this a towerized 1200 or the desktop wedge model?

Who did you buy this from? A retail store or someone on EBAY?

What's the length of the cable, by the way.

@Daniele:

Check the IDE connector on the motherboard. One pin should be labelled 1. Now check the cable, one line should be marked red. Connect the 44pin connector at the end of the cable to the motherboard with the red line towards pin 1. Make absolutely sure that the red line points towards pin 1 and that the connector is not displaced by one or more pins.

The connector in the middle should have 44 pins, too. Make absolutely sure that you connect the red marked line to pin 1 of the HDD. If you connect it wrongly, the HDD and the motherboard will be fried !

The last connector should be a little bit bigger but has only 40 pins. This one connects to the CD-ROM drive. Again make sure that the red marked line is connected to pin 1, although it is not as dangerous as with the 44pin connector if you connect it wrong.

The 4 spare lines of the 44 pin connectors hold power. So if you connect them to some of the data pins, your devices get fried. Make absolutely sure that you connect everything correctly and don't use "trial and error" methods when it comes to cable positions.

Bye,
Thomas
