Workbench 3.0 vs. 3.1
« on: January 24, 2013, 12:59:29 AM »
I've posted a WTB 3.0 or 3.1 in the marketplace, but got to wondering, what's the difference between 3.0 and 3.1?

Also, will I be able to tell much difference on an A500 with 8Mb RAM and no enhanced processor?

Thanks,

Curtis

Hi,

There are a lot of difference's between 3.0 and 3.1, one of the major differences is the use of a ppc accelerator. Another if I remember right is the use of Amiga OS 3.5 and 3.9

Also to use 3.1 you need the roms to upgrade to  kickstart version 40.68 and workbench version 45.1 or you won't get the full use of OS 3.1.

You should be able to find all the changes incorporated somewhere on Aminet.

You should know its a dogs world, but where is your pancake?

I have no idea what your talking about, so here is a doggy with a small pancake on his head.

3.0 was never released for the 500.

It would not make sense to run 3.0 on an A500, because there is no 3.0 ROM for it. You can only get 3.1.
That puts a hitch in that idea. Running 3.0 software on the 3.1 ROM may work, but may cause a few problems too.

Ran WB 3.0 with 3.1 ROM's for awhile. No issues to report, actually the A500 plus felt quicker to me.

Upgraded to WB 3.1 which felt slower. Anyway works fine.

Also to note had more chip RAM available under 3.0.

Although on the A1200 with custom 3.9 roms and OS 3.9 I can achieve more chip than on the A500 plus.

You can run 3.0 from an A1200 on an A500, I did it for a while.

There are multiple ways to do it: eprom, mkick/skick or maprom from an accelerator.

Using 3.1 disks with a 3.1 rom is going to be better though.

If you have workbench 3.1 & extras 3.1 then you can use crossdos to transfer files from a PC. You need to find a dms image for the install disk & the dms executable, put it on a 720k pc floppy, mount it on the amiga and then write the dms to repair your install disk. You might need two floppy drives. If you can't find a dms of the install disk then you can use winuae to run dms to create one from an adf.

yea, what is the big deal with WB3.5 and 3.9
F.i at Revision in the Amiga Demo compo, the demo needs to work under WB3.1. Not allowed if it only works under 3.5 or 3.9?

4Do you want original disks or do you have no means to transfer and write ADF's to floppy?
You can install to the hdd from WinUAE using downloaded images and put the hdd back in your A500.

If you really need on floppy and do not need original floppies I could write the WB floppies and mail you free of charge :)

I can use ADF's.  A bit cumbersome, but doable.

As far as a hard drive, I'm actually using CF microdrives so I can switch back and forth between 1.3, 2.1, and 3.X.

However, if you're offering copies, I'll take it!

I concur, WB 3.0 will run perfectly with a 3.1 ROM.  Especially a A500 with no HD or RTG card, CPU etc.  You are simply not really taking advantage of all the features of the OS to warrant pushing the issue.  If all you can get is 3.0, get it.
