Problem installing MUI
« on: May 24, 2006, 01:29:04 AM »
Background:
I did a fresh install of OS 3.9 on my 6gb hard drive.  It's split into 4 partitions of 1.5gb each and the filesystem is SFS 1.236.  Eerything seems to work fine, except for this problem: When I attempt to install MUI, it stops after giving the error:

COPYLIB: Can't open file " " in line 299
DOS Error Type: unable to locate a file or drawer

Now, I've tried a few things.  One, I attempted to use the 43.3 installer from aminet instead of the 44.10 version that came with OS 3.9.  Didn't work.  Second, I tried copying it to RAM like one poster on another board suggested.  Didn't work.

Does anyone know where this problem stems from, or how to solve it?  Is this SFS related?

Any help would be appreciated.

What object is in line 299 of the instal script? Is it possible there is a corrupt or missing file?
I just tried a quick re-install on my older A2000 (it's only got OS 3.5 installed) and could not get this error. (It also uses FFSTD64 rather than SFS).

It might have something to do with that little smiley face icon that has no name (or more correctly is named " ") located in the MUI drawer. IIRC Windows doesn't like copying that file during any sort of backups that I do of my Amiga Forever (MUI) directory.

Maybe just manually copy it over, edit the install script and try to reinstall.

Did you extract the archive in Windows?  Like Pete said the " " is an illegal filename in Windows.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

I had this problem when trying to install MUI in WinUAE before.  Just gave up and used a pre-configured workbench.  It can be a hassle when transfering files via windows, if the miggy side isn't networked properly.  If archives remain compressed, there's no problem, of course.
Good good study, day day up!

Actually this had nothing to do with windows - I d/l'd the archive from Aminet using AWeb.  The issue seems to be the way  the "unarc" program handles LHA files.  I dl'd/installed standard LHA from aminet and it's fine.  I'm now using it with an LHA frontend, and the "lha x mui38usr.lha" extraction worked fine.

So if you have a chance, decompress the MUI LHA file with unarc and see if it installs - bet it doesn't.

If it helps, I maintain a MUI archive containing all the standard MUI 3.8 stuff as well as various custom classes (required for YAM, Miami, IB, AmiTradeCenter, etc).

Download it here and follow the instructions in the .readme file to clean/update/tidy/repair/install MUI.
Existing prefs, if any, should be kept untouched.  You'll need to register MUI if you want to save changes.  The archive comes in demo mode, you need to supply your own keys.  Registrations are still possible with Stefan Stuntz.

I'll get around to writing an installer script for it one day :-)

It does - if you install the Boingbags. It's a known problem that the original version of UnArc cannot handle file names containing spaces correctly. That's fixed by BB1.
