Hi everyone! Amiga newbie from Norway

Hi everyone! First, i have to excuse my very poor English, i'm  from Norway and doesen't speak english so often.
Secondly, i'm glad to see that there are so many people who are interrested in these good old machines!
I'm a newbie in the technical Amiga world, even dough i have owned and used Amiga's mostly for gaming in many years.

Then i have some questions:
I'm using my Pc and Amiga to transfer Adf's both ways. I'm currently using an serial connection with Amiga Explorer, but this is so extremely slow! I want more speed, so i have looked at two posibility's. The first one: http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=440

I'm wondering, which one of these are the "best buy"?
(I going to use it with my A1200)

Another question, my trusty old Amiga mice are starting to brake apart, so i need a new one. What do you guys suggest?

Hi Sigurd! Welcome to A!org.

Amikit sells Cocolino which allows you to use PC mice. Or, there are ebay sales for used mice, and sites like oldsoftware, which have supplies of older mice left over. Just look at the bottom of the A.org screen and there are plenty of links to suppliers.

I haven't done any transfering except by putting files on a 770k floppy, so I can't recomend the other stuff. :-)

Hi Sigurd. Welcome
A nice solution if you have a hard drive is to get a TCPIP stack installed (AmiTCPv3.0b or Genesis with OS3.9) and find a compatible PCMCIA ethernet card (see cnet.device on Aminet - this lists compatible PC cards). Amiga Explorer works much faster over TCP/IP and is a much better program than the Ami-PC linkup I feel.
It can be fiddly to get networking working but we will give you lots of help on A.org if you need it :-)

Why not get a ethernet card instead? I think that is the least painful way.
But from those two options, i would definitely go with the flash card adaptor.
I personally just use a cd/dvdburner for transferring files.

amigakit also sells pcmcia ethernet cards i think.

I would like to have an ethernet solution of course, but i have no harddrive in my A1200..
I have tried to connect harddrives to it, using a 2,5 inch to 3,5 inch adaptor, but when i boot Workbench and try to use the hd-install tool, it cannot find it..I've tried with several old hd's, ranging from 40 megs to 850 megs without luck..It's kind of frustrating. And the adaptor works i guess, when i'm putting the IDE-cable the wrong way on it, i't won't even boot   the Kickrom..Help!

Hi! Welcome to Amiga.org.

If you are using an A1200, why not use a PCMCIA CF Adapter Kit with the EasyADF software.

It does not need a hard drive (floppy boots standalone).  EasyADF will convert the ADF files into Amiga floppy disks.  It will also uncompress LHA archives.

Thanks for the advice! I've already mentioned it in my first post of this thread  ;-)
How fast is this device? And this floppy boot standalone, does it require booting from Workbench, or does it actually boot from scratch? It's a silly question, i know, i'm just curious.  :-)

Sorry should have read your first post properly (!)

The device is pretty fast compared to a Serial/Parallel link cable.

It boots standalone into a Wizard which prompts for a couple of Amiga copyrighted files from the Workbench disk then loads Workbench. The CF card is automatically mounted and EasyADF is then ready to go.

That is very odd indeed! I have nothing to suggest there, but i hope someone else here do. An a1200 is very crippled without a HD in my opinion.

Though.. hmm could it be that you are using the orginal a1200 psu? then that could be possible it..

Why are you using the 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor? Are you trying to use 3.5" hard drive? Then you need power to the drive  :-) If you are using 2.5" drive then you just need to use a small special cable, no adaptor.

Sounds odd, I have been using harddrives ranging from 60 MB to 30 GB without problems. Someone near you might be able to help you out setting it up, if not some people here can do it through mail (I wouldn't mind).

The harddrive will be needed for connecting to the net with a ethernet card, and will also be useful for transfering files with a PCMCIA CF adaptor, or what ever solution you choose to go with.

I bought it mainly because i had some old 3,5" hd's laying around, and this adaptor was a much cheaper option than buying a 2,5" hd.  ;-)
And yes, it's got power, a power adapter cable was included with the the hd adaptor.
It's a while ago since the last time i tried to get it to work, i will give it a shot soon again. It should only be to hook up the wiring's, and the jumper set on "Master"?
