European games on my North American Amiga 500 ??!
« on: April 26, 2006, 10:17:38 PM »
Hi guys

newbie question here , I just bought a games lot on Ebay , mainly European games and about 75% of them dont work on my A500 , is it because of the PAL format?

Thanks

Some games patrticularly newer ones require AGA graphics or more memory then what the A500 alows. Some games in pal will run on a 500 but you need to switch to pal by holding down the two mouse buttons while the amiga is booting (at least it works on my A4000) I havent used an A500 for almost 15 years.
Amiga 2000HD Indivision ECS
Amiga 4000D towerised OS 3.1 and 3.9 on CF cards
Indivision AGA, Mediator 4000
Video Toaster 4000 Flyer v4.3 Millenium.
202gig of video drive space & 5gig audio.

No, if he's got a stock A500, the two mousebutton early boot won't work. This is only on 2.0+ and works only on games that use WB.

Get "Degrader" on Aminet and select "50hz 50hzsystem". I used degrader for tons of PAL games and demos before I upgraded my A500.

Edit: Oh, I forgot that you might have a problem getting the Degrader program on an Amiga disk. I suppose I could mail you a disk if you need it.

By the way my A500 run with Work bench v1.3 with 1 meg of Ram , so is there any permanent way to resolve this problem or the ''Degrader'' is the simpliest solution.

Thx

First of all, you need a monitor capable of displaying a 50Hz scan rate.  An NTSC TV won't do the job.  If you have a 1084 series monitor from Commodore then you're in business.  I tried looking for another patch by Nico Francois that would patch your system to think it was PAL upon reboot, thus allowing you're system to work in PAL mode without having to hard-wire PAL mode.  It seems that it isn't on the Aminet so you'll have to make do with Degrader.

Secondly, be sure you try the Degrader method first because not all Amiga 500s have a new enough Agnus chip to switch modes.  If you do have the Fat Agnus then it will be possible to do the hardware-based switch if you want to.

1MB Agnus is required in order for the Degrader to work.
An easy way of checking out if your Agnus is good enough is by using SysInfo and checking out how much ram can Agnus address.

Yes you need the fatter agnus (8372A) or you cannot do PAL.  Like the A1000's they cannot do PAL and some older A500s (I have one)

Some PAL games will run in NTSC, but most will not.  Get a new Agnus and you will be set (might have to get another A500 as it might be cheaper!)

Really? I was sure I ran Degrader before my upgrade - only with original Agnus (8370) and the A501. Maybe I was just hallucinating or going partially insane. I'll have to test on my spare A500.

I know for sure that Degrader won't work on the A1000

No.  Relokick is used to install Kickstart 1.3 on systems that have newer Kickstart ROMs.  What you need is to click on Mr. A500's link to download the program called Degrader.

Get away from ebay! The degrader software that they have pointed you to is free. Get to know the Aminet site. It is full of excellent PD/Shareware/Freeware programs and patches for your Amiga.
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse

Wow! it's more complicated then I thought  :-D

Again my question might sound stupid but how do I know if my A500 is an older model? is there any production date? and finally how do I use SysInfo to check my dear Agnus?

I think you are confused.  Degrader will run on any Amiga you do not need a special agnus for it.  You do need it to use the PAL feature of the program though!  Make sense?

Yes, I just tested both Degrader and BootPAL on an A500 with original Agnus and they don't work. BootPAL even checks and if you have the old Agnus it says 1Mb Agnus is required. (... my memory must have been wiped by the radiation from the 1084 monitor ;-))
