A590 partitioning problem
« on: June 09, 2005, 12:50:53 PM »
I have A590 from my friend (20 bucks.). Old XT drive is dead. Now its replaced with 520MB Seagate drive, and... when i make first partition larger than 20M it cannot be formated (scsi write err or sim.) Is there any limitations? Or: can i format it in my A300T?

Hi,

The A590 is basically an A2091 inside of an external box IIRC, so you should also check to see if you have the 7.0 version of the ROMs.  You most likely have the "Proto" version 4 of the Western digital SCSI controller in there too.  That could be upgraded to the faster and less buggy version 8 (or the AMD equivalent) at some point to make your life easier.

You should be able to prep this drive on an A3000 and stick it in there.  Make sure you are using a newer version of HDToolBox on either machine and some of these sorts of oddities go away.  Adding RAM to either the A2901 or the A590 also helps too.

Good luck!

If your using Kickstart 1.3 then you need to place a copy of the FastFileSystem for KS1.3 into the Rigid Disk Block on the harddrive itself.

This should then allow you to format upto 1Gigabyte in harddrive partition space, with a drive capacity limit of 2gigabytes.

At the moment, with your 21meg harddrive format problem, seems like your defaulting to KS1.2 harddrive limitations.

The FastFileSystem should be on your workbench 1.3 disk, check for it under the L: directory.

Use this partition software, more useful under KS1.3 than the old hdpreptools supplied by commodore :-)

enjoy :)
Completely useless? I can always be used as a bad example

I was playing around with all sorts of hard drives with my A590 and 1GB was indeed the max size I could get working in WB1.3.  I used HDInstTools to prep the HD and it works great.  1.5MB/s too!

Digging up an rather old thread in order to get something specified.

What are the limitations of the FastFileSystem from Workbench 1.3.3? What is the biggest harddrive that can be used, and whay is the biggest partition that can be used?

I have just gotten a 4.3 GB drive for my HD8+, and want to replace the 2.1 GB drive that is currently installed. However, while loading Workbench 1.3.3 the computer crashes, as the CLI is about to be closed.

I haven't used the full 4.3 GB, but I have a 1.5 GB partition installed (used a Kickstart 2.0 machine for partitioning). The 2.1 GB drive that is being replaced works fine with all 2.1 GB under Kickstart/OS 1.3.

the disk is old enough to have some fysical problems (maybe) after all these years don't you think? can you test it in an other amiga or pc with scsi to test it?

I also have v6.6 ROMs and I could not get more then 1GB of space to work without errors.  I have not tried with 7.0 ROMs yet I plan to as I have the ROM images that I can burn to EPROMs.  I would grab HDInstTools and a HD under 2GB and you will be all set.  You can use a larger HD just do not make a partition over 1GB, you should be fine.
