A1200 Keyboard issue
« on: March 31, 2006, 03:07:20 PM »
Hi all,
I've got an A1200 here in front me.  It's a commodore model but I'm not sure of the motherboard model.

The problem is that 4 of the keys on the keyboard do not work.  It's "|" right through to the help key.  I've replaced the keyboard with a spare and it still does't make a difference.

It also has a hard drive in it.  I've tried it with or without and stil cant find a problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what it may be?  Other than replacing the MB ;)

Cheers,
Lee

The keyboard is a simple matrix that's controlled by U13, so if a couple of keys (a row or column of the matrix) do not work, it's an issue of either
the keyboard (ruled out)
the cabling
the MB connector
the lines from the connector to U13
or U13 itself.

Check the green cable to the motherboard is inserted securely.  The keyboard plastic membrane with carbon contacts could be at fault or misaligned.

Otherwise you can just replace the keyboard on its own with a brand new A1200 keyboard

Doesn't that short ribbon strip detach with the keyboard?  I thought, as two keyboards have been tried, both the keyboard and the ribbon cable are unlikely contenders for causing the fault.

Have you checked if the contacts are clean on your connector?
Good good study, day day up!

The short ribbon cable is part of the larger membrane inside the keyboard unit hence undetachable

If part of the plastic keyboard membrane gets damaged or the carbon pads for keys wear it is very difficult(impossible?) to fix.
