Amiga 1200 kickstart upgrade
« on: March 14, 2006, 04:00:34 PM »
Hello, I'm new to this board, but I've been working with amiga's since a long time ago, one way or the other.

But I do have a question:

I have a "regular" Amiga 1200 with an internal 3 GB harddisk, a modified AT PSU delivering 170 Watts, so it wouldnt crash everytime, a M-Tec 4MB 1230 accelerator 25MHz 68030/40MHz 68882, a SCSI CD-ROM connected via PCMCIA (Squirrel SCSI).

The question is, it still has the original Kickstart 3.0 inside, but I'm running Workbench 3.1 (since when I bought the thing, the owner lost the original 3.0 disks), it seems to be running okay though. But does it make much difference to install a 3.1 KS instead?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome!

If you want to use large hard disks (4GB+) without third party programs and want to upgrade AmigaOS to version 3.9 or 3.5 then the Kickstart 3.1 ROMs are essential.

I heard it was supposed to be really unstable doing this, but I did it for about 3 years with no major problems.

Thanx for the reply.

I'm only using the amiga for games, so a HD with more than 4GB isn't really necessary.

But will OS 3.5 and/or 3.9 work well with only 4 MB fastmem? I can upgrade the M-Tec to 8MB, but then the Squirrel wouldnt work, and thats not an option :/
