Missing chip on A500 board, and a few other questions.
« on: March 02, 2006, 05:28:54 AM »
A friend of mine is offering me his bare Amiga500 system (no power supply or anything), and I've noticed a few odd things from some pictures he sent me a link to: http://photobucket.com/albums/e293/lapsamiga500/

He said in addition to having lost all the screws to his system, there is a rom chip missing from the socket.  Would this be the KickStart chip (where it says "ROM" above the socket)?

Also, since I'm going to be using this computer for a presentation in addition to a few other things (some light OCS gaming).  Is there any suggestions one can give aside from the RF/Compsite adaptor for usage in programs such as DeluxePaint III, and DeliPlayer (if there's an A500 version, or something equivalent)?  Thank you.

1. Yes ROM meens KickStart ROM.

2. Amiga RGB->Scart should help if you're using a TV, but why not get a second hand 1084 monitor instead?

That A500 realy look abused, poor thing. If you don't have a PSU and ROM leying around it might be cheaper to just grab hold of a better looking complete secondhand unit.

If the ROM is missing, I would think that some-ones removed it cos the machine was dead myself.

But if you want to spend money on that poor thing then.

I have a A500 PSU and some ROM chips kicking about.

BUT I also have another turd coloured A500 with PSU, SCART, MOUSE etc that i'm waiting for payment from a eBay user.

Total cost of it was £20 inc UK P&P.

And as I sold a PSU for £6 and a ROM for £5, you might as well buy a whole set-up :) (look on eBay, theres LOADS of them)
There are also sellers who sell the bare cases (so your turd become a cream beauty again :) )
A500 1MB - A590 2MB
A600HD
A1200 OS3.9BB2 - 10GB HD
A2000 3.1 ROM - Mini-Mega 2MB + 8MB Aries - Malibu SCSI + 1GB HD - VXL-30 68030/50MHz
CD32
Power Tower - Waiting for Power Computing to ship bits :(

Bleugh! The colour of that A500 is awful!

And... if your turds really are that colour, consider varying your diet a bit!  :-D

If it's free, take it. If it's not, it should be awfully cheap, considering that its not up and running.

Understood.  Also for those who offered me a KS1.3 chip it's going to have to be NTSC, due to the fact I live in the United States (but oh I'd love to get one of those televisions that supported NTSC and PAL, AND had the SCART connection.. though I doubt there's any power converter that could take constant usage like that).

Hi,
Kick 1.3 is the best choice for gaming on A500.
For your TV set, well you "survive" in the US.
Try go get a second Hand "BARCO" monitor, or an Arcade Cabinet with a big screen and made a 'scart' connection, or import a TV from France (SECAM/PAL/NTSC/RGB 50/60 Hz and some LCD/Plama also have VGA/DVI-I or D/ Analog and Digital Y-U-V up to 1080i) ;) you'll just have to pay tax and a 110/220v converter (just a 200W output transformator is required).
Keep the Faith !
VG 5000/A1000/500/500+/600/2000/CDTV/1200PPC-GREX/1200PPC -ATEO-BV/4060D/CD32/Aone/Peg 1/Peg2 G4/ various funny machines too  :-) http://www.mo5.com/collection/index.php?pseudo=CLS2086
I also repair drives of our old beloved Amiga

Honestly, that pile of neglect is not worth your trouble. I see you're located in Florida. I'm in Atlanta. Would you be interested in an A2000 with all the basics including 3.1 KS and hard drive in working condition for the cost of shipping?

BTW, if your friend is offering that 500 for free, take it.
Many of the parts can be used as spares in a 2000 IF they're still good.

How much is the shipping on the unit?

As a rough guess, I would say around $40. I'd have to
gather all the parts and weigh it packed to give a more
acurate cost.

If this Amiga is free, then you should for sure accept that offer even if it is for spare parts. It looks to me like only the kickstart is missing and you might also want to clean it out a bit.

Afaik there is zero difference between the kickstart in the ntsc and pal models. You would need to get a ntsc a520 tv modulator though, if you want to output a colour picture to a ntsc tv.

Amikit has them in stock: http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=42&products_id=227&osCsid=90b4b9985bdd57806c63b22807740a99
I have no clue if this is ntsc or pal though. They also have flicker fixer that let you use your a500 with a standard vga monitor.

Unfortunately due to a bit of a financial situation I can't afford it right now.  There is a friend of mine who actually has more interest in it than I do (he's been meaning to get an A2000 for several years).  If you want I can PM you contact info for him.

Plaz, is there any chance I can forward your offer to a friend of mine?  A friend just bought me a refurbished A500, but I'd still like to see your A2000 go to a good home.
