New amiga, and it's physical design
« on: February 01, 2006, 10:39:11 AM »
There has been talk of a new amiga running aos4 for quite some time now. I think it will eventually happen, hyperion/a inc is too far in to not at their last desperate efforts give in to at least something eventually.

So chances are, there will be a new product, which comes in some kind of enclosure. I have an a1000 on my desk, right next to my other equipment. It's strange, as it still looks like a modern design. It doesnt look antiquated at all from a design perspective, from my point of view. The only thing on it that doesnt look a blast from the past is the way the floppy area looks, that needs an update for sure.

I know a lot of people like the other designs, like the walker, or the cd32. I think the walker is pretty wierd looking, and the cd32 reminds me of a boreing old vcr or cable box.

I think it would be nice if we got an official release of aos4, and a box that reminds one of the a1000. And wouldnt it be a nice touch if on the underside of the shell there was a paw print.

Nice idea, but sadly I think this will only appeal to Amiga enthusiasts and retro-lovers. Those who are looking for a flashy computer would probably not be moved by this design :-(

Why the paw print underneath?

): You are probably right... I grew up with the a1000. The a1000 on my desk is there to remind me of what got me started in what i do, so its something very improtant to me and it represents a lot. Still though, when friends come over, they rarely ask about it, and they are supprised at how old it is. I think the design was pretty nice for it's time.

On mine theres a bunch of signatures on the underside of the shell. And a dog print. It was jay miners dogs paw. To have the print on a future design would represent the history of amiga, and i think that would be a really nice touch, especially since the first crowd to buy the machine have been around quite a while.

I never knew about the dog paw, but then I have never seen an A1000 in real life. I think the dog paw would be a more attractive and meaningful logo for the Amiga than the boing ball...

I agree, I never like the boing ball idea. The check mark was much cooler.  Maybe it's time for a change.

As it's very much a niche product, it would be good to see it in a bespoke case - what happened to those Naya designs a few years back?

The design for a new Amiga (if it ever happens)needs to be something neat.  I would think that something more like a Mac MINI would be the way to go for a new design.  Small, stylish, and reasonably powerful.
