Wanted: Networking for Beginners/Idiots

Ok heres what Ive got:
Laptop running XP with Wireless Internet connection comming through a PCI card
Amiga 1200 with Viper 060 +64MB ram running OS3.9

Ive linked the 2 with a XOver cabel going through a network card in the a1200s PCMCIA slot.

Ive used Genesis to make the connection and I can Ping my PC from Amiga and vice versa.

My question ??
What do I do now to transfer files and go on the internet with my amiga??

I bet this question has been asked loads of times so feel free to link me to other threads and thanks in advance

I hope your wireless is WPA protected...

- activate ICS on XP, or get a better NAT router (Sygate, Winroute, ...)
- set Amy's default gateway to the private IP of your PeeCee
- try to ping some IP in the outside world
- set Amy's DNS server to the one your IP has (or the one XP uses ('ipconfig -all'))

Get into a dos box, type ifconfig.

The first two are virtual interfaces, so ignore them, look at the last one.

So providsing  you turned on internet connection sharing on the pc, all you habe to do is turn on DHCP on the amiga, and the windows box should nat to the amiga, the amiga should ask the windows box for configuration.

As for sharing files between the two, id recommend regular old ftp, it's the easiest ( in my oppinion, cause i'm used to ftp )

You will need an ftp daemon for windows, personally i use : http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

Not sure about ftp client on the amiga though... I would guess that what ever software you installed on the amiga for tcp stack and ethernet driver came with some basic utilities like telnet/ftp/ping etc.

With file zilla you'll have to setup a user account and point it to a directory somewhere on the pc to share files.

Using ftp should be pretty straight forward if you know a little dos commands.

cd = change directory
cd .. go down
ls to list files
get to get a file
put to put a file

mget to get all the files in a dir
mput to put all the files in a dir

bin to set transfer to binary mode
hash to show hash ticks so you know the file is going through
prompt to disable prompt for file get/put ( use this with mget so it doesnt ask you if you really want to download each file, you will see what i mean )

you have said you have pinged the PC from the Amiga. The PC's private IP is the one used for the ping.

Yes, from your post I assumed you've setup LAN between PC and Amiga successfully. Private IPs are the ones reserved for internal usage, i.e. on a private LAN (they're not visible from the internet) like
172.16.x.y
192.168.x.y
10.x.y.z
Public IP addresses (those visible to the world) need to be allocated through RIPE to ensure proper routing. Usually your ISP does that for you (you get one of those when you dial an internet connection).

WPA is the protection your wireless LAN needs to stop your neighbors, a hacker driving by, etc. to 'plug' into your network, use your network connection, listen to the data your transmitting (including unencrypted passwords, email, ...).
The older WEP is still widely used but is obsolete and shouldn't be used since it offers close to zero protection.
If you're using no encryption at all, well... :crazy:

Right thanks to your help I can now use AWEB to view the internet!! HOOORRAAAY THANKS ALL!!

However-- I can only seem to get on yahoo. Anyone know why that is??
When I do go on yahoo I get some error messages but thats due to not having the compatable software to open things.


Just found the network status box and it just says looking up on anything but the main yahoo.co.uk or yahoo.com pages
