Howto to get most out of my A4000?
« on: April 09, 2003, 07:42:26 AM »
I bought A4000 with Cyberstorm Mk. II few months back and been playing around with for some time now and started think about reinstalling OS3.9 and put all the patches and hacks in to get most out of it.

I've  been out of Amiga about 4 years now and I really don't know what to put in it.. Of course the newest libraries for 060 and and some math patches. What else? What is useful to get?

My miggy is A4000/060, 128MB, 40GB, Mirage Pro, Voodoo3/5 (I have both, I just cant decide which to use :)), Edimax 10/100 and SB4.1 Digital. The OS is OS3.9 with BB2 and I have received newest updates from Elbox.

The plan is to install fresh OS with all updates and Mediator files + good patches to speed it up. I tried to look up stuff, but all I found (or tested so far) is some math patches for 060.

Before you judge me take a look at you....

go for the Voodoo 3, cos that does 3d and stuff, whereas the drivers for voodoo 5 are 2d only.

I can hardly remember anymore, but Oxyronpatcher should do you well (it is a math patch so you might already have it), though I remember it did a lot more for the 040 on my system at least. Use sfs as the filesystem to get a remarkable speedup too (compared to ffs). hm, what more...well, latest setpatch and iprefs (not as important?).

Sincerely,

-Kenneth Straarup (using 3.1, so not sure what's included in 3.9).

First of all install the oxyron patcher i have a version wich does
not need the reboot and openoxyport send me a p-mail with your e-mail
address and i'll send it to you.

next thing is to get the HSM (high speed math lib's) it really does a
lot for your miggy but you have to register them but it ain't much.

Since you are a GFX card user plz install patches/hack's like
birdie,reqattack/visualpref's,magic menu,depthmenu,tools daemon and
ofcourse good old mui.
go to http://www.grsites.com/textures/blgr001.shtml and have download
frenzie with some good quality skins to use.

All these hack's/patches seem to be working very well together on my
A4000 CSPPC 060+604e and my blizz PPC 040+603e without getting
unstable, my A1200 is up for 21H 24min's and 19sec's now and still
going strong for problably 5 day's before i have to reboot coz memory
fragmentation :-D
Both my Amiga's run OS3.9 with BB1 and 2 installed.

Good luck and welcome back to the Amiga!

Thanks for the tips so far.

Is there anyway I can utilize the MMU on the 060?

There's a useful little utility called flush that will defrag your memory when run. I found it most effective but I don't know how it will run on your PPC.

Voodoo5 is better - there is no speed advantage, but V5 can do 3D acceleration in a window with 32bit desktop while V3 can't. This is because Voodoo3 has HW 3D support  only with 16bit colors.  Voodoo5 does work with current drivers in 3D mode.

V5 also support 15bit colors, which is useful with some older 3D accelarated games and demos.
