Sound, VGA Boxes And The Computer Nobody Knows
« on: October 28, 2005, 11:28:53 AM »
I bought one of those VGA boxes a while ago (as discussed in another thread) and it works well. There is one problem however. I can't get sound. It takes a three connector input, two sound and one picture (red, white and yellow). I have one end coming out of the modulator port on the Amiga and another going into the picture slot in the box but I can't figure out how to get sound. The box itself has an output for a pair of PC speakers. The sound lead that came with my A520 won't connect anywhere onto the box. I assume I need some sort of new lead. Any help would be much appreciated.

P.S I just started a computer course and one day a few of us were talking about what computers/operating systems we used. Most of the people were eighteen and not one had heard of an Amiga, they thought it was an obscure version of Linux!

:-?

Can't you just connect the miggy to a regular amp with a pair of bogstandard RCA-cables?

Thanks for the quick reply. The only sound equipment I own is a portable CD/cassette player/radio type thing. I've got about three pairs of PC speakers though and I was hoping to use them somehow.

Could you please post a link to the VGA box (specs etc.)?

Then why not get an RCA->mini-jack cable? I don't understand why you would want the sound to go through an A520 and the VGA -box.
-edit- A cable like this, probably only the wrong gender on the mini-jack side:

-edit2-
And doesn't the A520 only have mono-output?

Connect the sound outputs of the Amiga to the sound inputs of the VGA box with a normal stereo audio cable.

VGA box yellow video input -> modulator video output
VGA box red audio input -> Amiga red audio output
VGA box white audio input -> Amiga white audio output

Sound does not go through the modulator. Even if you use the HF ouput of the emulator, you have to feed the audio into the modulator seperately (note that the emulator has audio *input*, not output).

If you use the video connector of the modulator (as you do), the modulator is not at all involved in sound.

Bye,
Thomas

Since you have three pairs of PC speakers, if you have a hard time finding the adapter with the female mini-stereo plug on one end and two male RCA plugs on the other end that would plug your speakers directly into the Amiga's audio outputs, just get any lead with the two male RCA plugs on it and cut and splice those to your PC speakers.  I did the same years ago and even left the original mini-stereo male plug on the wires so I could use it on a PC again if I ever stopped using it on my Amiga.  It is just a simple (and ugly) removal of some of the speaker wire insulation to splice the RCA plugs to and tape it back up with electrical tape.  Sounds like you are looking for the cheapest, easiest solution as I am assuming you are a young new Amiga user.  Good luck, it is an easy fix.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Mmm.. Why not feed directly the two rca output of the amiga to the two rcas of the box?. I use it but on a scart connector to my tv. The two audio outputs to the two of the scart adaptor, and the video out of the modulator to the rca video socket of the scart adaptor.

Hi everyone, thanks for all your help (I know this thread is old but I've been revising for the past few days and haven't had time to login. I'm going to try and get the proper cable from the hifi store up the road.

The VGA boxes are here:

I got mine off Ebay however.

I had one of those VGA-boxes...
They're a complete disaster! :-(
Very poor quality if used with Amiga.

Hi, following the earlier reply on this thread about buying an  RCA mini jack I was wondering whether this would do the trick...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/STEREO-MINI-JACK-TO-2-RCA-PHONO-iPod-Y-CABLE-cyrr_W0QQitemZ7363108231QQcategoryZ23783QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

By the looks of it the two ends would fit into the Amiga's stereo sound ports, but would the other end fit into the port on the VGA box?

P.S The picture quality is not wonderful but it's usable and I was using a fifteen year old colour TV that was dying before this, so it's a step up.

Forget the vga box. Use one of your spare pc speaker sets.

The adapter your looking for is called: 2 RCA to FEMALE mini jack(3,5mm).

This is the cable you need:
http://www.audiogear.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?key=AdptMniJ-LRRcaM&preadd=action

It should be available in most in a local store. It's a pretty ordinary cable.

Connect the rca connector end to the amiga and one of your pc speaker sets to the female minijack.
