Just bought an A500....

Hi Everyone

After a couple of years of using emulation software to relive my childhood I have bought myself an A500.  I have researched transferring my adf's onto amiga disks, however I have hit a stumbling block. All the instructions I have found have need Workbench 2.0 and above, as well as Kickstart 2.0 and above. Is is possible to do it with WB/K1.3? Or would I be better off getting a Catweasel card for my PC and doing it that way?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I apologise if this has been covered in an earlier post, however I am at work and haven't had chance to look through all the forum.

Amiga Explorer from Cloanto works on wb 1.3, and is capable to write all kinds of adf's (also NDOS)

Amiga Explorer is the best thing I EVER bought for my Amiga+PC.  I use it all the time and it works via null modem or even faster if you have a network card and TCP/IP on the amiga.

You can even transfer the first file to the amiga over null modem with instructions from the software, no disk needed (other than WB1.3).

It's WELL worth the $ imo.

I converted a bunch of games from adf to amiga format. I had a pc and an a1000.

What i had to do was fire up workbench ( 1.2 ), go into the preferences applet, ( where the slider bars are for screwing up your wb colors, mouse speec, etc ) And configure serial port to 19200 along with bumping up the serial port buffer to the max setting.

Then you format a floppy.

I had a program on the PC which would take the ADF file and send it out the serial port.

After that i went to the CLI and did something like copy ser0: DF1:

I cant remember exactly what i did... I dont remember the program i used on the pc either... It worked great though, and took like 2 minutes to get an adf on the floppy.

I remember doing something with amiga basic as well to get adf images from the serial port to the floppy... I wish i had more information. I am sure somebody here remembers.

It's also possible to butcher a Workbench 1.3 backup to include XFS, which will allow your 1.3-based Amiga to read/write 720Kb PC disks.

If you do indeed have working wb1.3, then you could easily use the cloanto forever/amiga explorer package.. just hook up the serial null modem cable and follow the instructions..

OK, Back again!

I have a null modem serial cable, however it is 9-pin at both ends. Does anybody know if it is possible to use one of the amiga joystick ports as a receiving serial port to save me having to get an adaptor for it? I am sure I read somewhere that you can. If so, what are the required settings on both sides? I have downloaded a trial version of Amiga Explorer and the initial transmission seems to be leaving the PC but not going into the amiga RAM as it is supposed to.

Again, any help/advise would be greatly appreciated.

Do NOT connect that cable to the joystick port! Bad things will result (damage to motherboard chips)!

Grab a 9pin->25pin serial adaptor. I think they're still quite common. If you're in the US, RadioShack should have them, as well as most computer or electronics stores.

I use a catweasel for it, and disks work very well with my 500  :-D

Ditto, I also use Catweasel, but since I've just bought Amiga Forever 2005 (felt it was my duty and am looking forward to watching the video content), I will give the Amiga Explorer option a try.
