Amiga problems!!!
« on: October 16, 2005, 01:24:27 PM »
Hi

I have some problems with my Amiga.
I have not used this machine for maybe 18 months- 2 years.
It’s an A1200 in a power tower with mediator, up rated mach chips, power flyer (Gold ?)
Blizzard 1260, 1.2 gb, 20? gb (not connected at the mo, voodoo 3, sb 128, usb card, cd writer and an ide zip drive .
The last time I had a go at this Amiga I gave up in frustration, as if I remember correctly the power flyer was causing problems with os 3.9, I was also unable to get the Picasso prefs to “see” the voodoo card.
I had it up and running last night in aga mode, tried to get the mediator to see the voodoo, and messed something up as a (power flyer ?) message comes up with “hard drive validating” or something like that.
Btw at this time I had os 3.1 installed and running ok, but it seemed a little slow.
Mediator software was installed off the original floppy as was the MM cd software, although I had to get the Picasso 96 software off an Amiga Active CD.
My Amiga has been switched on for about 2 hours now waiting for the hard drive to validate! This seems a long time!!!!!
So will I have to re-format and start again?
Also if I have to re-install everything, what order and will the mediator, power flyer etc be better coming out?
What order for the software, OS first then????
Finally I can’t find the instructions for the mediator with regards to the voodoo driver, I remember something about installing the Cybervision 64 3d ? when Picasso 96 asks me,
And I think change the Tooltype? To Voodoo.
But tbh I’m lost.
Any help gratefully received.

Thanks in advance
Steve

Okay

Maybe there was I gave a little much information in one go.
The first problem I have to deal with is the ATA driver window which says "please wait disk validating".
I've just had a look at my Amiga, and there is no change after a couple of hours, again.
Just a blank grey Workbench screen and mouse pointer!
Does this mean I have to boot from floppy and re-format?
Also I'll take the Blizzard out before booting, but in what order do I install software after the OS?
Power flyer then Blizzard?

Cheers
Steve

Hi,

Are you seeing (or hearing!) any hard drive activity while you get the "please wait" message or does the Amiga just lock up doing nothing at all?

How big are your drive's partitions, and what sort of filesystem are you using?

..this is a great opportunity for me to ask the same questions, because I am actually going to get some Mediator and a Voodoo card for my "dusted" A1240 in ElBox Tower.. my machine specs: A1240/40, 32 MB, Elbox, some HDD and OS 3.5.. I am also plannning to get 4xEIDE, 64MB RAM and I have ready somne PCI cards to install..

..so I would like to ask You, dear Amiga insiders, what is the right setting up of the A1200 + Mediator system - WHAT is the right way of installing drivers and rtg system (Picasso 96, I have thios one on Cd, but do I have to register it?) and what card type should I choose in Picasso? Thanx a lot :-?

Hi Ali

No activity when the Amiga tells me to wait, but....loads of hard drive thrashing before this.
The drive is only 1.2 gb. As for file system, I don't know, it's the one off the OS 3.1 disks.
I've managed to sort that problem out, I booted from floppy and copied workbench back from my work partition, where I'd backed it up.
Just out of curiousity I went into the hard drive set up prog (sorry to be a dumb ass, can't remember its name)
That said that there was some changes made to the drive which needed to be saved.
As I had a backup of workbench I saved and re-booted, everything seems to be ok.
Just need to get the Mediator up and running now!
As I'm on the mediator list, I've posted there, and got a very quick response!
But for some reason I can't attach my Voodoo settings to Picasso 96.
I'm of work tomorrow, so I can have a late night, been thinking of wiping my Workbench clean and starting with a minimal set-up.
Would like a super smooth, fast system and I think that if I get the basics running smoothly, I can add other stuff later and see what effect it has on performance.
Have'nt used this Amiga for a long time, forgot about all the variables involved!!

Sometimes I've been able to get a drive that wouldn't validate from Workbench to do so on its own if I boot up with no startup-sequence.  Just hold down both mouse buttons when rebooting to access the early boot menu, and select "Boot with no startup-sequence".  If you use the "info" command from the initial Shell window, you can monitor the status of the validation process, normally it says "Validating" until the validation is complete.

If you eventually get an requestor with an error message regarding the partition, you might have to use something like Disksalv to try to repair/salvage your files, or just copy the data somewhere else and reformat the partition.

Hope that helps! :-)
