SCSI Zip drive used to be for the Amiga
« on: September 27, 2005, 08:24:21 PM »
Hello everyone,

Can I get a PCI SCSI card and hook up my 100mb Zip to my PC and retrieve my old files that were saved on my Zip with an Amiga?

Thanks,
Nam

Actually that is an interesting question. I wonder if WinUAE can do it...
I've done it when the ZIP has been formatted as a PC disk but yours is probably formatted as Amiga.
Anyway if it turns out that there is no way for you to read those on the PC side, and you have no Amiga anymore, then you can send those ZIP disks to me and I'll burn the contents onto CDs for you.

Probably not if the ZIP carts were Amiga formatted.

By the way, let me take this opportunity to say that I have an internal 3.5" IDE ZIP drive that will fit into your PC's 5.25" drive bay if you want to avoid getting a PCI SCSI card. Let me know, I'll part with it for a small fee.  :)

As X-Ray stated WinUAE should be able to do it (i.e. read the FFS disks). You can get a cheap NCR/LSI810 controller or an IDE ZIP drive, the disks will work in either.

Hey guys, how difficult is it to have WinUAE set-up? Do i need another HD installed in my comp? I'm running XP home. What exactly can WinUAE do?

Any one running WinUAE on XP? Any problems or notes?

Regards,
Nam

@ 68020

Is your SCSI ZIP drive internal or external? If external, I think this controller is better: link

X-ray.

It's external. Why do you think it'd be better? Will the one I mentioned above work?

Thanks,
Nam

The one I mentioned is more likely to work as it has an external interface specially for the older 'legacy' devices.

Edit: hey, someone still sells the same card I have, which is an old Adaptec 2904 like this one.
That's okay for me because all my SCSI devices are slow: CDR/RW, ZIP and a few 1gb SCSI drives.
If you are only going to connect slow devices, then get that one, it will definitely work with that ZIP drive and it is cheaper than the ones in the previous links. But if you want to put slow devices externally and fast devices internally then get the one I first mentioned.

@68020/X-ray
You've got to be kidding - those controllers are way overkill for running an old Zip. If you get a simple Narrow Fast SCSI controller, it's more than enough. I usually get those at eBay for 2-3 EUR. A 2904 is more like it.
One thing to get a better adapter is to look for active termination.
As there probably are no 25 pin PCI controllers, you'll need an adapter or a 25pin to HD50 cable.

Iomega used to sell a fairly cheap (isa)SCSI card just for the ZIP drive. I originally got my Zip for the Amiga and eventually got one of the scsi cards for the peecee when I got one of those beasts. I used it for file transfers, until I found an old Mac scsi HD in an external box.

that would be very good, but many of the newer peecees don't have ISA slots anymore. Mine doesn't.

That's why I'd recommend a simple PCI SCSI host adapter - like the AHA2920, 2904, NCR810
ISA sucks.  :-P
