Problems with FAST ATA IDE controller from Elbox...
« on: March 11, 2004, 09:19:15 AM »
Hello!

I have connected two harddrives on the primary channel and one CD-RW drive on the secondary channel.

I can use both the harddrives without any problems, but I can't seem to find the CD-RW drive on the secondary channel.

HDToolbox shows only the two harddrives and not the CD-RW drive, which it did when I only had one harddrive and the CD-RW drive connected the primary channel.

What can the problem be? I'm using OS3.9 and I have a A1200T with a B1230/50MHz and 32MB Fast ram and 2 MB chip ram. I also have the following hardware:

ff/sd
hypercom3+
Mediator sx
voodoo 4 4500 graphics card
terratec 512i digital sound card

I don't know if this hardware matter in this question. Is there anyone out there that knows the answer or can lead me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance!!!
/Jörgen

Hi Joergen,

It seems I was sometimes struggling with these issues as well,
with drives not being recognized and whatnot.

Does the "FAST ATA" controller require Elbox's "idefix" type program
in your s/startup-sequence? (If so, you might also have to fool around
with it's configuration a bit.)

Hello!

No, The controller have it's own driver and prefs program. I'm ot at my amiga right now, but can it be a simple thing like I have not copied the Dosdrivers CD2 and CD3 to my devs/dosdrivers directory?

The CD-RW are jumpered as a slave, so I assume I must activate the CD3 dos driver?

If the CD-RW is alone on the secondary channel it should be jumpered as master.

Hello!

Ok, I will try that. I didn´t think that the master or slave issue did matter. But I will certainly try it.

That sounds likely, make sure the dos driver is activated (this could also
explain why HDToolbox doesn't recognize it).

If the CD-RW is the only device on the channel, try setting it
to "master".

I know you sould be able to use all three devices on IDE, but the IDE channel is supposed to handle only two devices. If you want more than two devices try SCSI devices they can handle up to seven devices, and are just as easy to get a hold of as IDE drives, hope this helps.

@amigo600
Yes that's true that the IDE channel can only have two devices, but there is two channels on the card. Can you extend the thing about the SCSI devices? Do you mean that I should get a SCSI controller instead? or do you mean that I can use a SCSI device driver for my IDE controller?

fastata needs the ata3.driver to be started in ordfer to find the stuff on the SECONDARY controller, read the manual and install it properly and all will work fine, and master/slave has nothing to do with it, unless u set 2 drives on same chain to the same ..

anyway i would advice you to check the cables also..

anyway remember to install the ata3.driver and call it before setpatch/blizzkick (if u have blizkick)

scsi.device version should be when you have fastata 50.-1 .

cheers

ps:4 devices is max on fastata ..2 per chain!!
Whats up with all the hate!

I have fixed it now. It was only the ata3.driver that was missing in the startup-sequence.
