SCSI >4Gb
« on: June 14, 2005, 09:26:02 PM »
I have tried connecting several SCSI hard disks (9Gb 4,3Gb) using adapter (68->50) to A2091 (ROM 7) but hdinsttools always gives error:

"Device not found"
 :-x
A2091 works fine with 50Mb SCSI.
BTW, I cannot see termination jumper on those >4Gb SCSI disks.
What ID should be set : A0,A1,A2 and A3?
Better sorry than worry.

Try looking up the jumper settings for your drives on the net. I did that with my 3 x IBM drives and 1 x Plextor CD drive. The A0,A1,A2 and A3 doesn't always explain itself, like if you put a jumper on A0, it will not necessarily be SCSI ID 0 and so on.

Set the SCSI ID to 1, and only try with one device at a time. Maybe you will be lucky.

I installed a 2 GB IBM SCSI drive in my Kickstart 1.3 equipped A500 not long ago. I had to softkick to Kickstart 2.0, and then run HDInstTools in order to get all 2 GB going.

What drives are you trying to use, and which rev. of the boot roms have you got on the A2091?

The drives are IBM 9ES, 68pin and A2091 has 7.0 ROMs (at least I think it does). KS is 3.1
Better sorry than worry.

Yeah, I was thinking it was IBM drives. I have one sitting in my A4000 SCSI tower.

The IBM drives are a bit tricky to setup, at least they were for me. As already suggested, try to find the jumper settings for your drive on the net. I found mine by googeling for "IBM (drivename) jumper settings".

Set the jumpers according to the schematic that I'm sure you will find. Set the SCSI ID and set the termination jumper.

With Kickstart 3.1 it should be able to handle at least 4 GB of your 9 GB drive. After installation of OS3.9 you should be able to access the rest of the drive, but I take it is your plan afterall?

In case you have a 1 GB drive, try this one if you can not get the 9 GB drive to work. If the 1 GB drive works, then I'm afraid you haven't got v7 of the boot roms. The roms on my recently sold A2091 card had a sticker on the roms saying 7.0; any stickers or yours?

Not sure if this was covered, but when I was searching for a 68->50 pin SCSI adapter, there were two types. One provided an option for termination and the other didn't. I think 68pin SCSI handles termination differently than the 50pin, thus no option/jumper on the drive. It'd be on the adapter.

Oh also the SCSI ID options were on the adapter, too, not the drive. It was an IBM 9GB 68pin SCSI drive I'm referring to.

I had running a WD 18.9 GB UW-SCSI disk (68 pin) on the internal SCSI bus of the A3k (SCSI version 8) with a 68 -> 50 pin adaptor.

The disk is an LVD drive, not terminatable via jumpers. I terminated the bus cable with a passiv terminator and the it works fine. (OS 3.9, KS 3.1).

It seems to be termination problem. The 4,3 Gb (DDRS-34560)model works but 9Gb (DDRS39130)doesn't.

I have another 9Gb (DGHS)that has jumper for ACTIVE termination, should I set it to on?
Better sorry than worry.

@orange

At least you can not break anything by doing so, so I would suggest you try it.

it must be termination, LVD model doesn't have built-in terminator and I don't have external, eh.. :-x
Better sorry than worry.

@Orange

I know this probably won't help much......
I tried a couple IBM drive and had NO LUCK.
One was a 50 pin 4.3 gig and the other was a
9 gig (I think).
I've learned to stay away from IBM drives.
I now have a 9 gig Quantum 68 pin with 68 to 50
pin adaptor on my A3k SCSI, no problems.
I've found Quantum drives to be the most Amiga
friendly.
I guess what I'm saying is, get away from the IBM
drives and the A2091 card should work.
Stealth ONE  8-)

you can connect then both of them in the same cable with the 4.3gig being the last . you only need 1 termination at the end of the chain so if its a term problem then it must resolve...

I got two IBM HDDs working  :-)  :-)

Important thing is to put in the jumper for:

DISABLE SYNC NEGOTIATIONS

Amiga wouldnt boot at all without it (HDD LED constantly on).
Thats for IBM DGHS 50pin 9Gb HDD.

The IBM DDRS 34560 4,3 only needs jumper for termination.
Third one (DDRS 39130) doesnt have builtin termination and won't work.
(on A2091)

stormlord: yes, I thought about that too, but I want them in different Amigas :-)
Better sorry than worry.

I've used 5 IBM UWSCSI/U2WSCSI drives w/o problems, but only on 68pin cable of CSPPC.
