CGX4 worth it?
« on: April 13, 2007, 09:57:09 PM »
I'm currently running CGX3 with my CV64. I think it's the version on the OS3.9 CD. What, in practical terms, will be the benefit of upgrading to CGX4?

Only time I use CGFX is when Picasso96 doesn't support the specific hardware. I remember there was some speed gain although not much and I got rid of a videobug with CGFX4 instead of 3 on my old BVision. But I'm not the person to talk about if it's worth it... have CGFX4 here on a CD and I still use P96 now on all my machines (might change soon when/if I do the CSPPC+CVision combo).

I don't see why not, except for personal reason that might be cause the hardware is supported (actually P96 that's included with OS3.9).

If CyberGraphX worked on a Voodoo board I wouldn't
have switched. I bought it way back when and found
it to be faster and more stable then P96. I thought
V4 worked better then V3 and thought the improvements
made upgrading worthwhile and would still be using
it if I could.

I had no idea P96 worked with a CV. I have a problem with my CV64 where I can't select 24 bit screenmodes at 1024x768. Would upgrading to CGX4 or using P96 instead fix this?

Nope, there's no "preset" 24bit 1024x768 screenmode in either P96 or CGX, you need to create your own 24bit 1024x768 mode

imho CGX4 is better than P96 and it leaves you with more chipram left

You get screen dragging with CGX so I prefer it to P96.

un/fortunately, P96 is the best option for the CV64 (not CV64 3D)

Backgoung filling and menu are way faster with P96/CV64.

Tryed myself before to be forced to switch to CGX4 (due the newer CVPPC)

@Moto

I also got one..:)
Does your CV64 has 4MB ? If not it probably won't be possible to get a 1024 x 768 x 24 screen. It's already hard with 4MB, above 52Hz or so, as you start to get some slight artefacts on moving objects, wich are however bearable on static screens.
Can't remember above wich frequency the artefacts become permanent (also on static images), but you do your own screen settings and find out... The CV64 is a great card for ZIII transfers, if not the best but for high resolution 24 bit screens I'm afraid 1024x768 is as much as you'll get.

the better use is to setup a 1024*768 @16bit to leave space for other screen/eye candy. At 24 bit, is useable but slower.
