Hi,  I'm new to A.Org.  Hello everybody!

I bought my A500 way back in 1988 and it served me well until January 1995 when I moved to a PC.  In order to fund some of the gear needed for the DX2/66, I sold all my miggy gear including a GVP A520 (fully populated). That single action has ranked among the greatest bug-bears of my life since!  (That 52MB hard-drive was the sweetest I had experienced and found my PC hard disk slow by comparison.

So now I'm heavily into the Retro scene, but strangely struggling to get my Amiga experience up and running.  

(Something to do with the missing piece of the jigsaw methinks)

Anyway, I'll just float about on the sidelines for the mo' until I've got something decent to contribute.  I don't want to make a fool of myself.  -  But it's feeling great to be here and long may it continue.

Welcome back into the fold! There are many of "us" who have forgotten much and remember little.

I too missed that "piece of the jigsaw" somewhere in my Amigahood. Do not fear though... there are plenty of helpful and knowledgeable people here to help you on your journey forward to the past. :-D

Since you've been away and sold your Amiga before, how are you getting onto the retro scene now?  What I'm asking is are you using a used Amiga off of EBay or an emulator for the PC such as the version of WinUAE included on the AmigaForever CD?

Whatever the case may be we'll happily help you get it up and running.

I take most of it back (again ), I got WinUAE up and running at 02.46 this morning. Apparently my brain isn't just quite as stodgy as I had assumed.  (The joints are stiff but still moderately flexible - the brain is much the same !) So 'm now re-kindling my affection for Cannon Fodder  
 & Sensible Soccer (how could I possibly have been so stupid as to deny myself this for so many years

I'm online using an Acer Aspire 1363, 512MB, GeForce FX5200 and, surprisingly, barring a couple of teething problems, WinUAE is running as sweet as a nut.

Question for the Tech-heads: I am presently "on-line" by way of a wireless connection by the name of NETGEAR. Sometimes I get a message about a Residential Gateway.  The baud rate varies from 1Mbps to what seems like an unbelievable 15Mbps, but it really does whizz through downloads at an amazing rate. - Problem is: I don't know whose Internet link I'm on, so I can't ascertain why it's so fast. I've only had the Acer for a fortnight and switched on the wireless lan to see what it looked like, and here I am.  I'm familiar with landline broadband but this is ridiculously fast (at first I thought I must be dreaming) and what's more it's free.
What is the range for a wireless 80211.b/g lan?

More than likely one of your neighbours has set up their own wireless LAN, minus any security measures, with a high speed DSL or cable connection and since they have left it wide open, you are able to connect to it with zero effort. With 802.11b, I have been able to set up wireless bridges up to 100m apart, with a few custom mods of course, and the general range of 802.11g can be anywhere from 30 - 50 metres, depending of the environment. The reason your connection may be fluctuating between 1 - 15Mbps is because you are probably on the outer limits of the access points range and thus any environmental changes would have a dramatic impact on your connection speed.
