amiga 2000hd
« on: February 21, 2005, 02:18:07 PM »
hello,
I am new to this site so bear with me. I have a 2000hd, that i recently powered up (it had been stored away. it was working before). the hard drive blinks and nothing comes up on the monitor. i looked inside and didn't see anything wrong, but i didn't know what to look for anyway. i can't find a kickstart disk and i tried placing the workbench disk in but get no result. any help would be welcomed. thanks jerry

First I would open it up (remove the cover) then try
re-seating all the chips and cables that could have
loosened in shipment. Try booting again.
If that doesn't work then try disconnecting the harddrive
and boot from floppy.
If that still doesn't work, then you'll need more technical
knowledge than I have.
But then you can post the results of these tests and I'm
sure someone here can give more advice based on these
results.

BTW check for battery damage while you have it open.
If the battery is old or looks bad, REPLACE it.

thanks
i opened it up and reseatted the harddrive and the other card but the results were the same. i can't seem to find a battery within the unit. because i am unfamiliar with the inner workings i don't even know what the battery looks like, i haven't seen anything that looks like a conventional battery. do you think it needs a new video card? could it be the cable from the cpu to the monitor. if that is the case do you know where i can buy a new one? i do appreciate any help you can give. thank you jerry

The battery is a barreled shape object, with a metal contact on either end. Yours "may" be RED with Varta written on it, or something like that.

Saying that, it may be white and fuzzy..

It's possible that a hung up hard drive can keep the machine from booting. Instead of reseating the HD controller, pull it out entirely. In that case, you should get a picture of a hand inserting the workbench disk. (still or animated depending on which ROMS are in your machine.)
There is no video card in a stock Amiga. The graphics is done by the custom chips on the motherboard.

The battery on my A2000 is at the front of the machine
about the middle, almost under the middle floppy drive
slot. And yes, its a barrel shaped thing about 3/4th of
an inch long and about 1/2 inch in diamiter. It most likely
needs to be replaced. I replaced mine with a 3 1/2 volt
phone battery. If you are unsure how to go about replacing
it, do a search of the older threads here on A.org.
There should be something on it, if you can't find anything
then ask here on A.org. Someone will explain how to do it.

Back to your boot problem, try pulling all the cards from
the card slots. Just a bare MotherBoard with the floppy
drive. Boot from your WorkBench disk. Unless you have
a bad WB disk or more serious problems on the motherboard
it will boot.
If you can get that far (boot on floppy) then its trial
and error to find which add-on card is causing the problem.
If it boots on floppy then add something (Harddrive maybe)
and try booting again.

I think that the battery should be BLUE, red is in A4000, IIRC.

its near the 68000 CPU (loong chip), relatively close to mouse/joy ports. I had one a2000 that had very bad batt. leaking (and corrosion), its CPU had green legs. Once that green (oxide?) stuff was removed from 68k legs, A2k worked    . If you haven't change anything since it worked, its gotta be the battery.
BTW, you can even disconnect FDD (together with all cards like melott told you), but then wait a bit longer for KS(1.3?) image to appear.

Most important would be to see some change from black to anything else (grey and white preferred) :-)

PS. I prefer litiumhack to phone batteries (check older posts)
Better sorry than worry.

Thanks to all for your advice. I replaced the battery but still have the same problem. Does anyone have a copy of a kickstart disc? I can't seem to locate mine. Where can I purchase one? I am about ready to give up on this unit, maybe it would be cheaper to buy a used one on ebay. Anyone out there wanting to sell their 2000hd?  jerry

The A2000 doesn't need (and can't even use) a kickstart disk. Kickstart is in ROM.
As most people here told you, you should get a white screen with a disk logo (kickstart 1.x) or a purple screen with an animated disk going in a drive (kickstart 2.0 and higher).
What have you connected the machine to? Try locating the video out connector (next to the L/R audio) and hook it up to your TV (composite in). If you get a (black/white) screen it means the 2000 is at least functioning.
