HD spindown/shutoff
« on: March 14, 2005, 11:00:31 AM »
Hi All!

I've recently started to experience problems with my A1200. The A1200 has a Blizzard 1230 and a Western Digital Caviar 31600 3.5" attached via a 2.5" -> 3.5" adapter. The power for the HD is taken from the floppydrive. The power for the A1200 is an A600 PSU.

What happens is when I insert a disc in the floppy the HD does a spindown and starts to spin up again and stops answering - the computer becomes useless due to no HD-access. Note that this behaviour can occour randomly also, even without HD or floppy-access.

I'm suspecting some problem with the power supplied to the HD.

Be well.

Yes, I haven't towerized my A1200.
The original A1200 PSU was lost many years ago.. Maybe it burned up.. hmm :)
I've used the A600 PSU ever since without any problem at all - until now.

Could it be the (old) HD wanting to fly to heaven?
(5V at 0.4A, 12V at 0.27A)

You need a new PSU.

Ok, so it seems to be the PSU. Maybe I'll go for a tower right away, thanks!

You don`t have to towerize you amiga, You could always modify a pc power supply, Thats what i`ve done and works great.

An A500 Power Supply has 20% more power output than an A600 PSU.  The A1200 came standanrd with an A600 power supply but the best PSU you can get for an A1200 without adapting a PC power supply is the Bigfoot Power Supply.

Thank you for the reply,
how would I have to modify a PC PSU in order to use it with the A1200? Btw, have you moved your A1200 into a "PC-tower"?

Be well.

I'd love to order from Software Hut but I must say that my wallet is a bit shallow atm.
