« on: March 15, 2005, 11:45:41 AM »
Ok I have a A1200, knocking around @home which I have been thinking about using for the internet (loadsa xp adware issues!) What Hardware/software would I need? What Spec acceleration would the A1200 need?

68040/28 absolute minimum, PPC recommended.

OS3.9 / Ethernet adaptor

You can surf via AGA GFX,,, but its crappy

Basically, only the top end amiga's provide any quality internet browsing imho, and that means a Mediator / Voodoo or an Amiga GFX card.
WinUAE Only... OS3.9 with 512mb ZIII ram ;)

How much should I pay for a high spec machine(ukpounds)? What kind of Virus and/or adware problems could I be looking at?

I'm hoping that most virus are M$varietys :)

Who are the Internet providers and how much?

Adware > none
Virus > Virtually None.
ISP > Any really, i guess, dependant on your hardware.

Hi spec machine, goes anything up over £500 for something like an A4000T (C)

To be honest, Id rather go down the AmigaOne route. But if your wanting classic C= hardware, dont expect to get 2005 style webpages on a 1992 machine. Its not going to happen (at least not in the way you would like).

Best to speak to someone like RyuMiggy, in the #amiga.org chatroom. Im sure he would be happy to advise you (he uses an Amiga 1200 / BPPC for his internet connection).
WinUAE Only... OS3.9 with 512mb ZIII ram ;)

With an Amiga 1200 Desktop I would recommend BlizzardPPC and the BVision. This gives you speed and better graphic without having to convert your amiga into a tower.
I would also recommend the 68060-acceleratorcard (without PPC) as this is enough for internet. But then you wont be able to connect a BVision, and you're stuck with AGA-graphic at 256 colours. I dont think you have use for a PPC with the internet, yeah it gives you the datatypes to load the images with the PPC-processor but no more.
Best is a tower-conversion with the Mediator-board and giving you the possibility to use cheap PC-hardware like: Ethernet, Graphiccards, Soundcards and tv-cards.
And you will never be able to surf the web on an Amiga as you can do with the PC. Hopefully the AmiZilla-project will be done soon.
Wait before you'll buy any BlizzardPPC, cause they are very expensive second-hand. Hopefully ACK will release their acceleratorboard soon.

I use my A3000d with CV64, WarpEngine 040 @40 and
MultiFace I/O card with IBrowse to serf on dialup.
It works fine. On a scale of 1 to 10 comparing it
to my 1.3 gig PC with Opera I'd say it rates about
an '8' maybe even a '9'.
Granted.. if you have to buy a system just to serf
with you'll have to decide if its worth it. But since
I already had the system I'm happy with it.

As LinchpiN mentioned you have the AmigaOne or the Pegasos as an alternative. But here you have the same browser as in the classic-amiga and you still surf the internet better with a PC. But the program acts faster with these machines as they are run in the PPC-processor but in emulated 68k-mode. I do actually have a complete Pegasos 1 unit for sale, please see www.ebay.com for more information about the system.
BUT, with these systems you cannot play your older games that needs to access the custom-chips in the classic-amigas.
But you can play Quake 2 for example =)

You need Genesis or MiamiDX to connect to the internet. Miami 3.2 was provided by OS 3.5 or Genesis comes with AmigaOS 3.9 CD. You need a PCMCIA network card, you could choose between Wireless or one with UTP cable. And a driver for the network card. You can find it on www.aminet.net and type network driver.

Aweb II webbrowser is included om both Amiga OS 3.5 and 3.9 CD.

I could browse the internet with an Amiga 1200 with a Blizzard 1230IV accelerator card. The CPU is an 68030 and clocked @ 50 MHZ. Sometimes this CPU is as fast as an 68040@25 MHz of an Amiga 4000/040. Okay, it was not very smooth in AGA resolutions but, it works.

And buy the biggest SIMM you can afford.

I would recommend the latest version of MiamiDX since it can handle DHCP if you've got a router. Of course it's time-limited I think. I have a MiamiDX-version that's  registered and it works great!

Aweb II that is included in OS3.5/3.9 isn't too much to have =)
Although it now is free and you can download the latest version from internet =)
But I like IBrowse best!
