Amiga 4000D in huge tower case w/Prometheus & speed hack
« on: February 08, 2005, 03:06:21 PM »
I'm looking to sell off my A4000D tower project. As it stands now there is NO cpu card. 18MB installed and all latest chips/KS. Prometheus is installed in the second to last slot with the case closed. This means you have 4 PCI and 2 Zorro. Actually if you leave one PCI slot emty you can put a low profile Zorro card in the top Zorro slot, such as Kickflash. That would give you 3PCI and 3 Zorro.

The case itself was a work in progress. VERY big. 250watt AT power supply converted for A4000 motherboard. Computer turns on and off by the power switch in front. The back of the computer looks pretty good, but can use finihing. i was going to extend the mouse/joystick ports to the back and actually purcased the ribbon cable/connectors. Never got to it. Motherboard worked flawelessly with a CS-PPC and many cards for a long time for us.

Here's the catch, there is a speed hack in this computer. The only one in the world I am aware of. I have it wired to a toggle switch inside the case. Using it I would get about 30%-40% more speedups in 3D gaming such as Quake II. To use it you need RTG and RTA. It kills AGA and mangles Paula. Just put a Voodo in the Prometheus and add a Zorro sound card for AHI. No guarantees on the hack. It's very basic and simple. The cause and effect of it is debatable, which is why I never released any information on it. Once you won the computer you can either easily remove the hack, or test further and go public.

Make me an offer.

Close, but no cigar. Raising the MB timing slows everything down significantly.

well .  . this mod works only with a Prom/Voodo or with other PCI solutions too? (or better with a Classic Amiga+RTG/RTA)

Feel free to not answer . . i will understand :-)

It's only been tested on A4000 w/ Prometheus. It may very well work with other PCI solutions, but it's not recommended. Other PCI solutions may blow up causing grave bodily damage, or burn down your house. :-P

More or less. I am hanging on to my software for now, using it under Amiga Forever. Overall I am terribly burnt out on Amigas in general, guess that's what happens when you mix hobbies with business.

@LinchpiN

Don't worry, you'd have to pry Amiga.org out of my cold dead hands. I'm an addict. :-)

Besides there is always emulation and AROS. AROS is really getting exciting IMHO. Who knows maybe even things will change to drag me either back to classic, or even OS4 one day.

Are you sure you don´t want to share the speedup information with the rest of the community now that you´re ditching your hardware ??? Just add to it "at own risc" just like the information about changing crystals in order to speed up the processors  :lol:

Well heck, mang, all you need is a '98 box and a pair of PC floppy drives, as well as a copy of DISK2FDI to make images for you and you're all set. ;)

@Effy

I belive he already have, you just didn't get it. ;)

Think hard on this: if a faster crystal on the motherboard makes things go slower then a ______________ could possible make things go faster?
