OMG IT WORKED!!
« on: January 15, 2005, 05:08:18 AM »
Hey,

For those of you who read my threads about me taking off the SCSI chips/etc off my BlizzardPPC... IT WORKED!!   I thought it had not, but someone told me to press S to disable SCSI.  And guess what!  It's working now! I still need to wait for some packages to arrive to format it with OS3.9 on IDE, but I can't beleive my crazy idea to DOWNGRADE it to non-SCSI version worked! :)

Thanks,

Neofree

Hey, that's good to hear!
But do you now always have to press S? Or can you flash it somehow with a non-scsi firmware?
Wouldn't it be possible to place a new SCSI chip? I don't know if you can solder SMD components, but you should be able to find such a SCSI chip somewhere...

I think that desoldering SMDs is actually harder than soldering them. All you need is a fine soldering iron with small tip and tweezers.

But why would one want to remove SCSI? Was it dead or because it can't be overclocked?
Most of Amiga users praise SCSI "its faster, it uses less CPU, bla bla"
Better sorry than worry.

@ Tahoe

nope . . there isn't non-SCSI firmware for CSPPC/BPPC.

@ orange

neofree had seriously damaged the SCSI chip (and IIRC removed).

Good to hear you have fixed the problem, neofree :-)

EDIT- i remember now, that someone has a BPPC without SCSI.

@ neofree

other the IC chip, there are some buffers-components SCSI related onboard.

Should be interesting to know how works the nonSCSI BPPC version at startup.

IIRC it wasn't fastened down properly prior to shipping and became loose.  SCSI got damaged in transit :-(

Thankfully it was only the SCSI and it's working without it :-D

Cool stuff neofree :-). Now only to find a way to permanently disable the SCSI. Was there an option in the BlizzPPC's bootmenu to disable it?

To those who asked:  The SCSI chip was damaged in shipping.  I made it worse trying to fix it.

And you guys are right, desoldering is tough... So tough I actually cut the pins off from the chip and used the iron to just push them off aftwards.  The only problem is I tooka  few traces off too around the SCSI chip.. Along with the 3 that were already damaged, there are 5 or more bad traces.  I did remove SCSI and the extra hardware as well that I could see that was not on the version without SCSI per pics on amiga.org and amiga-hardware.com.

I had actually ordered another broken board to try and fix one or the other, but the amiga repair center in france finally replied and said try to press S.  He said though you can't reflash without.. So I asked what else I can do to make it think it's non-SCSI version, havent heard back yet.

How do you get into the boot menu?

Thanks,

Neofree

By holding ESC when you're booting.

Nope, it should display on the standard PAL/NTSC output. (The menu can promote to BVis though).

Maybe some help here :
* I can't get to the BOOT-MENU of the my PowerUp card, Why?
o First of all if you have a BlizzardPPC without SCSI you have to flash your card with the latest flashupdate otherwise you don't have a BOOT MENU.

If you have a BlizzardPPC or a CyberstormPPC and have problems getting the BOOT menu. Don't press the ESC-key immediately after you have pressed the CTRL+A+A keys. Wait until the POWER LED is lights at full strength or until the caps-lock light flashes, then it should work. This is because the Amiga doesn't check for key presses until the caps-lock light flashes.

Having a hard time finding a working link for the firmware upgrade.  Anyone got any?

I already tried waiting for the lights to flash, that's how I got S to work.

Thanks,

Neofree

There's a link on the page I posted above, however that page hasn't been updated in 5 years so I have no idea if that's the most recent flash update (it's dated 2000).

I can't get to my BPPC start up menu just by pressing ESC after a boot/reboot, I have to keep tapping the button to get into it.

I tried pressing ESC at different times and for different lengths ut I could never get it working.  Tapping it works though :-)
