Angry Mob
« on: January 11, 2005, 04:25:10 PM »
OK,

So on the internet (without spamming anyone), how do we all chant "We want OS4! We want OS4!" like an angry mob??? Hehehe.

Seriously, why can't they release it as is and release a patch if something aint right or unfinished?  I can understand wanting it to be "done" but at the same time it's just taking too long to even be worth the effort.

Thanks,

Neofree

We'd all like to see that, but I honestly have my doubts we'll see a BPPC relase... in my life time anyway :-D

My only hope is that Karlos sends me an illegal copy of his version , Yup fingers crossed :-P

You're right, I want the BPPC version! :)  Plus, people aren't going to take it more seriously until it's officially released...

Sure that would make sense to them, but not for me...

The way I see it is I can run both classic software (well) and try OS4 too on the same machine.  When (**IF**) my usage of OS4 outgrows the machine, then I'll upgrade to AmigaOne.  But right now it really seems like throwing money out the window.  os4depot.net is not impressive if that's all the software out for it.

Thanks,

Neofree

Releasing an unfinished version, wouldn't give a good first impression of the OS. And as the first impression is really important I think Hyperion makes the right thing not releasing the OS with bugs that can easily be avoided if not releasing it in a rush. Probably PC computer mags are going to review it when it's ready, so I don't think they want to release an OS that is just half ready.

I don't think OS4Depot has all software for OS4, as all software from there is free to download. Then as the OS isn't ready yet I think we can expect more software when it been released.

Personally, I'd much rather it appeared in 2006 and was super stable with all the bells and whistles than if it appeared tomorrow in a Microsoft inspired fit of making it to the marketplace early (earlier?) and having numerous "service packs" or "enhancements" to download.

What credibility would it have if it turned out to be unreliable or incomplete?

Hyperion understand well that it's not just their reputation on the line, but that of Amiga on the whole so the requirement for fully functional software is clear.

Let's just hope it's not too much longer though, eh chaps?  It's been "almost ready" for two years now so I can well understand the impatience.

Great comments.  But:

1. Who said it isn't ready anyway?  Beta testers seem to think it runs OK.

2. OK so you wait until you've finished whatever requirements you feel are needed.  It's still going to be slammed for these three: 1. No fully compliant browser.  2. No office tools.  3. Not enough software.

The point is, the longer you wait, the more DEAD the market is.

Thanks,

Neofree

@neofree

Sure there may be dangerous waiting for too long too. For Hyperion too I guess it would be of interest to start making money from the sales of AOS4, so when they now chose to wait with the release I think that there is a reason behind.

1. There seems to bee alot effort put in browser software at the moment. 2. A port of Open Office seems to start too. 3. This is an issue ofcourse, but hopefully there will come some great applications.

Well and hopefully the release are not to far away, and  maybe a pre-release could be something for the classic with PPC too in the meantime. But that ofcourse is up to Hyperion.

A pre-release of BPPC would certainly hold me over for awhile.  Why can't they just put it up for sale AS IS and simply call it a Pre-Release?

The bigger issue of software is going to remain until it is officially released though.  I don't think many people are going to release or even begin developing products until then.

Thanks,

Neofree

Exactly that's the point.

Me (and he?) don't want/need an A1 currently.
I have (He has?) an A4k with CSPPC & CV.

I can't understand that they are still retaining the version for classic PPC Amigas - do they want to wait until the last CSPPC/BPPC has died and everybody has to buy an A1 as well?

But if they wait longer and longer the A1 hardware will be outdated as well (some call it outdated already today).

Somehow the waiting for the classic version of OS4 reminds me of the update orgies the PC users are used to
([ironic mode]"The classic version will be available befor the A1 version!", "It's finished when its finished!", "The classic versio will *NOT* come out before the A1 version", CSPPC is outdated (is a version for classic PPC amigas needed at all anymore - go and buy A1 & OS4 and throw away your A4k with CSPPC and CV), A1 is buggy and outdated before the official/final release of AOS4 (go and buy an micro A1 if you want to run OS4 once the final version is out), Micro A1 outdated before official/final release of AOS4 (go and buy an Amiga labeled phonie if you want to run OS4 once the final version is out), ..., finally there will be no one left to buy anything..., story ends here[/ironic mode])!

 :-(
All the best,

Dandy
