I had rather an amazing experience this morning (Tuesday), one of those once in a lifetime things.
when I saw what I think was Comet Hale-Bopp, I had that feeling.

I was in LA at the time and the sky was very clear and the two tails on the comet were VERY clearly visible to my nakid eyes.  :-o

this isn't quite as clear as I saw it

nice pics but I saw longer and thiner tails. but basically as clear.

it's really amazing to see that in the sky.

i think you missed the part where I said I was in LA (Los Angeles).

Of course, LA also has "light-pollution" :-P

it was a fluke. It was twilight (late afternoon) going into evening and everything just worked out where the day had been clear. Lucky.

Erm, because LA suffers famously from smog, caused by sunlight reacting with ozone (and other things).

Hi
Are the explosions from the Geminid Meteor Shower?

==========================================
From Reuters.Com:
Several loud blasts were heard in the Indonesian capital Jakarta and two nearby towns early on Sunday, but one radio report said it could have been a meteor shower.  Police, on high alert after warnings from Western governments of possible terror attacks over the Christmas and New Year period, said they had no information on the blasts. A presidential spokesman also said he had no details. Local Metro TV reported residents heard the blasts around 7.30 a.m. (1930 EST) in Jakarta, the satellite city of Tangerang, and also Serang in West Java province. El Shinta radio said it could have been a meteor shower.
One caller to El Shinta from Bogor, just south of Jakarta, reported seeing a large object, suspected to be a meteor, hit the earth in the distance.

Hum,
It’s doubtful that it was associated with any known shower, and i had a quick search for know manmade re-entries - none at that time...

The shower was probably a basketball/fridge sized rock breaking up 100km up...

Hey - so I`m not the only one who heard that!
A German news TV station brought a short note on that.
I hoped to hear more on that on the same or other channels later - but nothing!

What I found interesting is that one or two days later the earthquake/tsunami happened nearby.
These events couldn`t be linked somehow, could they?

All the best,

Dandy
